Hello! Crappy weather here today so I've been doing some reloading. I recently acquired some 457132 boolits in 20:1 alloy lubed for black powder. Has anyone used these in a trapdoor with BP? My rifle likes the 457125, but would like to try the Postell design. I also have a new to me set of Lyman dies with the M die and pointed bullet seater plug to use for this project!

Have a great day and thanks!

The Postell has a slimmer nose, but weighs more than the 457125. Therefore it might be long enough to be difficult to chamber.
Of course I can't know if this could be, as the only trapdoor I have ever been near was in the floor of a hayloft...and I fell through it.
But, you might check a round, or two, before you get them all loaded.

If you're rifle has the faster twist for the 500 gr bullets it'll handle the postell just fine if their diameter is compatable with your barrel demensions.
Seat it to the driving band atop 70 grs of 2 f with a .030 fiber wad, and watch the ballistics experts jaws flap when you start smacking the 1000 yd gongs with some regularity.[smilie=l:

Shot some back when I was a kid, in a cut-down trapdoor. As I recall, I loaded with 55 g. FFg and an Ox-Yoke wad intended for a revolver. Accuracy was OK but nothing to write home about. I loaded some for a later Trapdoor; they chambered OK but I sold the rifle before I shot them.

Good evening
First thing I would do is find out if your trapdoor is excessively fat about the throat area.
My 1884 is .462 and it would ONLY shoot 500 grain plus from 40-1 mix to any kind of accuracy.
BUT any mold that drops .463+ will do nicely cast from 40-1 and all the 2F the case will hold.
For the boolits that have insuffient lube capacity I smear the noses with my B wax + olive oil lube before loading in any of my single shots. This leaves that extra little space for powder.

Loaded one with 55 gr by volume 1 1/2 FG Swiss and .060" Walters Wad today. Overall length was 2.652". I seated the bullet past the first band and applied a firm crimp. I test chambered it in my 1884 trapdoor and it looked good. Loaded up 9 total and will hit the range and see what we can do!

Thanks for all of the input.

Have a Great Day!
