Win 230 Data

Picked up a couple pounds of 230 - not 231.

Any one have any data for 38 special - 158 grain bullet? Or maybe 9mm or 45 auto?

From a 1973 Lyman book: 230 powder
.38spl. with 158grn GC , 2.8grs @ 690fps to 3.7grs @ 875fps
9mm with 121grn. boolit, 3.5grs@ 990fps to 4.2grs@ 1105fps
.45acp with 225grn and 200grn, 4.0grns@710fps to 5.2grs@ 910fps

I have an older Win reloading pamphlet that shows loads for Win230.For 38spl 3.9gr with 158gr lead for 880fps and 15500cup.
9mm 100gr power point 5.0grs 1175 fps 29000cup.
9mm 115fmc 4.5grs 1060fps 26500cup.
45acp 185gr wc 4.0gr 770fps 12500cup
45acp 185gr wc 5.3gr 910fps 16500cup
45acp230gr fmc 4.9 805fps 16500cup
Most of these are the only loads listed so I assume them to be max. I also have about 4or 5 lbs of 230 left and have always wondered why they switched to 231 as there's not much difference between the two.

Some of the burn rate charts that I have seen show the two about 10 apart from each other.

The problem with list-type charts is that "x apart" means nothing whatever.

Imagine you have five people you want to arrange by height. The first one is 5-6". The next three are all exactly 5-8" and the last one is 7 feet tall. Note that there is very little difference between the first two, none whatever between the next three (but you have to put them in some order anyway) and a huge jump to the last one.

230 is a bit faster than 231. I found my newer win booklet and it shows 3.9 of 230 with 158 for the 38 and 880 fps where they show 4.3gr of 231 for 865. In the 45acp they show5.6gr of 231 for 795fps with the 230gr. So 231 is slower than 230 and builds the same pressure for less velocity. I prefer 230 but it's getting really hard to find any as they haven't made it since about 1970.

I was kind of surprised when I opened one of the cans last night. This powder looks a little more like flakes than 231.

Smells fine.

Does this sound correct?

Don't know what 231 looks like but my 230 is nice shiny flakes. Regards, Woody
