Hello, I'm looking for some possible loads for the ranch dog 290 grn bullet for 45 long colt. As cast they weigh 295 grns. I have a bunch of ramshot true blue powder, but also have enforcer, hs6, bullseye, 296, lil-gun. Oh the gun is a ruger blackhawk in 45 colt.

23.0gr of 296, mag primer, moderate crimp. 30K cup, 1300fps.

Editted to add, just in case some yahoo comes along and reads this data and tries it in anything less than a Ruger. DO NOT DO IT! This is a Ruger ONLY load.

OK, I feel better now.

Thanks, but I don't want anything that hot, I would like to stay around 900fps

Do yourself a favor and go buy several reloading books. If you're going to reload, you need the proper tools, reloading manuals are the most important tool.

I have several reloading manuals, I have been reloading for about 17 years, the manuals I have jump from 255/260 cast to 325/335grn in hot ruger loads. I just want a good starting point. I always double check data given. I have emailed ramshot for info. Just hopeing somebody may have had some info or experience with this weight of bullet.

Good afternoon
If you had Unique on that list I would say give 8- 8.5 grains a go. I do not have a 295 bullet but a 282. My Ruger did not do badly with it. Seems soomewhat mild and moving faster than I see it at 25 yards. I did not run my Chrono on it.
I have not tried HS 6 but that should be about the same neighborhood.

I think I still have half a can of unique.

I would work up from 21.5 gr of 296, to 22.5 gr. NO MAG PRIMER. Use a Federal 150. The .44 and .45 Colt brass are too small for mag primers.
Do not tumble lube, use a good lube like Felix or one of Lar's lubes. The RD's work great with regular lubes.
Make sure the Ruger does not have throats too small for the barrel. If they are, get them reamed or lap them. Run your boolits through a .452 Sizer like a Lee to remove excess lube. Soft lubes can be rubbed into the grooves with your fingers but harder lubes will need pan lubed. Carnauba Red works fine for that. Even Lar's alox mix is better then tumble lubing, he makes great lubes.
I love the RD boolits even though they have TL grooves.
This is a 50 yard group from my SBH .44 with 22 gr of 296 and a Fed 150 primer, RD 265 with Felix lube, .432".

Supertodd,
Oregon Trail data shows 17 grains of ww-296 for a velocity of 855. That seems like quite a reduction from the 21-22 grain thumper loads mentioned by 44man and others but is in the speed range you mentioned.

I just got the same mold and my first loads were very gentle 6.2 Unique which chronoed at 700fps. Accurate and pleasant to shoot. Hope to try some 296 loads tomorrow.

Rickk I could be wrong but 17 gr of WW 296 sounds like it might be two low for the 45 case. Some slow powders when used in small quantities in larger cases can cause hang fires and other problems.

However I would rather be wrong than see you have a safety issue. Some of the other guys can probably answer this more fully.

44man witch lube do you feel is better for the 45 Ruger LC, Lars Carnauba Red or the BAC (spelling)?

I have not had any problems with tumble lubes, even in 45-70 up to 1650fps. My BH has a 451 barrel and I size bullets to 452. all the cylinder holes are 451-452 thanks for the info guys. I knew somebody would come to my rescue, good shooting. As for primers I have Rem and CCI. No one in southern oregon carries federal primers.
