Sarco has 8mm/06 Bbl blanks for 30 bucks and 98 actions for 90. Im seriously considering building a lightweight cast boolit slinger. does anyone have any experiene with this round, if so data/results? Thanks ahead for any input,
Aaron

Using the group buy 270gn LFN we did some years back I see the 8mm/06 as a 338 light.
Similar boolit/bullet weight as the 338 Win mag and approaching similar velocities

I had no idea that it was even in the ball park of the .338 win mag. Sarco doesnt specify nationality of the 98 actions, im sure they're not German or Swedes, most likely something less desireable. The action would probably run into limitations before the cartridge then? My brother has a Howa in .338 and im not sure that I'd want to shoot the thing on a 100 year old action!

Check out what actions they are offering...reason? Some 98s will not accept an 06 case full length without magazine modification.

As far as strength goes the 98 actions are among the strongest available but DO vary with the country they were built in. Ideally one would be best off with German actions (including German occupied countries or influenced countries) prior to 1943. Some German actions after 1942 are less than optimum on the heat treating processes used in slave operated factories.

If your doing 8mm-06, go with AI. Its more than worth it

L Fred:
I agree about the AI version, I have one. BUT, If Aaron is just going to shoot lead in his, there would be no advantage to the AI cartridge.
I'm getting 2800 fps with a 200 grain jacketed bullet in mine. This is my "magnum" cartridge.

I had one years ago. It was a sporterized WWI98a german Mauser that had been converted to the 8mm-06 cartridge. What I remember is that it was superior to the 06 in power and shot really well. I only had it a short time but was impressed by the cartridge.

you will have do some work on a 98 action Its not long enough for the 8mm-06 I was going to do same thing with a turk and it may work with cast but it dont for jackets.

sounds like using a 98 might be a hassle for someone as amerature as myself. any thoughts on using a long action m70? it was stored in a farm truck for sometime and although it is functionally sound, it looks like a farm gun.

lead fred, how much increase in velocity/energy are we talking in regards to AI?

The m70 would be a dandy action for such a project. BUT if you're going with a long action, you have another option too. I'd seriously consider the 338 Magnum as a possibility. Obviously it is your project and Lord knows I have plenty of wildcats, but one needs to be aware that a factory cartridge will always bring more than a wildcat if one wants to sell. From the point of using a 8mm barrel (which seems to be part of your plan) the m70 action "may" have a problem feeding a non-belted Magnum IF it was originally chambered for one. A fat Magnum case should work ok in that case. If the long action was chambered in an 06 type cartridge you should be miles ahead with it over the 98 (and I like 98 actions).

i do like .338 win mag, however, im not planning running hot loads thru it, mainly as i have plenty of more powerful rifles. the original chambering of the m70 was 30.06 so i believe it will feed ok. i will mostly be shooting light cast loads, so i can seat the bullet a little deep if need be. The 70 shoots just fine as is, but i guess im not the only one who comes up with projects for no apparent gain.

the 70 will work fine mag box is no problem I done mine in 338-06 and it will do everything a 338 mag will at 200yds and not near the recoil and no bolt head mods. Brass is cheap and with the Lee cast it a one hole shooter
