Could you pp a lead bullet and shoot it from an inline muzzle loader? Would it be accurate or just a waste of time

Plastic sabots may be your better choice................instead of wasting your time.

Well, maybe more than one answer here.

Not arguing with RRR, the plastic sabot may well do what you want.

There are a couple of articles on paper patching for muzzleloaders. One is for hollow base Minie style bulllets. Link here:

http://members.shaw.ca/bobschewe/

and one is for solid boolits posted on Cast Boolits here:

http://castboolits.gunloads.com/showthread.php?t=71134&highlight=idahoron

In all honesty I would not have thought a paper patched solid boolit would do well (except those designed for target guns with false muzzles and starters), but there you go, Idahoron is getting great results.

I have not done this myself so can't comment from personal experience but I see no reason there would be any difference in performance from a traditional style gun or inline with regards to paper patching.

Hmmm, maybe if your inline has a really fast rifling twist there may be some issues. No harm in trying though.

As long as the muzzle is not counterbored for easy loading it should work fine. I mean, cartridge firing BP guns use bore diameter soft lead bullets that are paper patched, right? The only difference is you don't have a case holding the powder. Plus the paper will possibly let you get away with the fast twist that naked bullets won't tolerate. Now the trick will be finding the proper diameter bullet. Just for experimenting, you might try Buffalo Arms for pre made bullets and if they shoot well then order a mould.

They shoot PP bullets in Long Range Muzzle loaders all the time have for A very good long Spell. Some current shooters still do. They use bullets patched to just at or a .001 under bore Diamater, and shoot quite well at 800-900-1000 yards, However they were using Black Powder not smokless. These rifles do not have false muzzles or starters.

I have a misguided friend, God Bless his ornery old soul, that shoots one of those savage in line front stuffers. He was complaining one day about how much those copper jacketed bullets you put in a plastic sabot.
Well I reached in my ammo box and pulled a few of my patched bullets out of the case and said here try these.
He said I wouldn't shoot one of those in this rifle!! I asked why not ?? he said there lead, I said yes they are here put one of these in that plastic diaper your using and shoot it.
Well he did, he said hey they fit the sabot, I said no kidding, Well he shot and he said man they kick, and started for his spotting scope and I turned it and said shoot gain. I got him to take three shots and let him look through the scope.
He looked at me and never said a word.
I figured that they never hit the paper the way he looked at me so I just had to take a look.
Those three shots looked like a clover leave, Now he keeps bugging me all the time for my bullets and I'm glad to give him what he needs.

The bullets you give him don't need to be patched...right?

Yes they need to be patched because his plastic sabots take a .450 or .451 diameter bullet and that was what my bullets I was using were.

Boy! Do I have a mould for him!
.450" and no paper required!

Okay! It's not Paper Patching, but the man asked a question about accuracy!

Here's a target I shot out of my .50 Inline, with a cusrom barrel.

0.500 bore, 0.510 groove, 1-28 twist.
MMP black sabot with my own swaged 300 gr HP-SWC, 0.450 diameter bullet.
85 grains GOEX FFG, MuskOX lard and Ider fat for lube.

100 yards, 5 shots and some of my swaged bullets with MMP sabots.

Wild thing , find yourself a copy of Ned Roberts Muzzleloading caplock rifle and read the chapter on paper patched bullets.

MuskOX lard and Ider fat for lube.
Oh, no!
Now it's a thread about exotic lube ingredients.

Is that eider fat taken from a hen, or a drake?
How about canvasback fat (or is that canvas backfat)?
Inquiring minds (aww...you know the rest).

MC:

Not quite! Just something unique!

However; this stuff has been field testing for the most harshest of conditions, and has proven itself to be an excellent "COLD WEATHER" lube for the cold Northern Canadian climate. Tested to -65 F, and still performs well.................just ask the Inuit women! :groner:

The fat has to be from a Hen, no exceptions! Don't ask why...........

One thing for sure, when making your mix, DO NOT get any down in there.............or you may have "FLYER"S".

Wild Thing:

The bullets are 0.450" diameter. Using a cast bullet should work, I don't see why it wouldn't. A bullet design with the fewest lube grooves may be better, you'd have to try and experiment, working up a load that shoots well enough out of your rifle.

Okay, I'm down with that. But tell me this, Ukrainian Dude.

How does lube get worked into a load that has lead bullets mounted in plastic sabots?
Is that a grease cookie under the sabot to keep fouling soft?

Your correct MC. It's a lube cookie to help keep the "FOWLING" soft!

Oh,no!
Suddenly it all comes clear to me.
I now understand the true value of eider fat!

I suppose the musk ox tallow is included to give the bullet a scent of the target it is supposed to find...no?

Nah, Musk is to attract the game. Everybody loves the smell of Musk. (Wasn't that an old Aqua velva commercial?).

Sorry Guys, your both wrong! MC was close.....................but not quite!

OK, here's the secret as told to me by an old Inuit Shaman! [smilie=1:
Musk Ox lard has a natural chemical in it that helps, without a doubt!

Here, judge for yourself.................It helps maintain a tight "GROUP"!
