Several years ago I purchased a set of RCBS dies for .45 Colt called Cowboy Dies. This set had a nice blued finish and brass rings and such, but the real premis was that the sizing dimensions were specifically set for those of us who use cast lead boolits. My Colt set came with an internal expander for .454 and another for .452; neat. But I can't seem to locate them for sale now. Are they disontinued?

Not that I know of. Try midway or one of the other suppliers on line. The sure way to find the your die set is to buy another just like it LOL. FB

Midway sells them individually, but you can still buy them as a set from RCBS.

Much thanks to Y'all. I did see some individual dies of the set at Midway. I did not lose my set, but I did not want to recommend something to a friend that no longer existed and I was not gonna let git his paws on mine! ;-)

I will check out the other sources.

Both Midway and Graf sell the Cowboy sets. The bad news is that they're both out of the 45 Colt sets at the moment. You can easily find them on both sites by searching for "RCBS Cowboy".

Yeah, you can find places that sell them. Don't plan on having them any time soon. I ordered a set of 38-55 cowboy dies in Jan. Don't have any yet. enjoy Mike

At least in .45 Colt, I see no need for any of the CowBoy dies, except the internal expander. It is sold seperately. The other dies seem to provide case dimensions that are either equal to or smaller than my Lee dies. The "Full Length" resize Cowboy die does NOT full length resize in my press, its about a 3/4 length resizer and leaves an odd bulge. They are kinda purdy though.

Hopefully resurrecting this thread works. I have a set of rcbs dies for 44 that put a serious, almost over exaggerated bell on the case mouths. I didn't like it enough to start using a lee expander. My lee dies put a much more gentle taper on the brass that works better IMHO. Do the cowboy dies put the ridiculous bell on the case or a smoother taper? I am specifically asking about 30-30 dies. Thanks.

The Cowboy die does not bell. Wait, I think it may if you go ape and crank it too far maybe.

Anyway, think about what your case looks like when you pull bullets. That's what the Cowboy expander does. It is so sweet!

RCBS will send you the expander that comes with the cowboy die set, I have the one for 38/357 it is marked .358
It opens my Starline 357 brass case mouth to .3555 not quite .356
The cowboy dies expand the top of the case like a Lyman M-die it's a step and not a funnel.

I use my regular rcbs dies with the cowboy expnder die. They just send the screw in part, not the whole die.
My 44 mag and my 357 ( rcbs ) regular dies do not size all the way down the case.

Have had good experiences with my RCBS 44-40 cowboy dies. They handle my hand cast loads very well. Can't comment on the availability but I can say that I think they're a good choice for Cowboy calibers and cast loads.

MIDSOUTH sells the individual expanders by themselves so you don't have to pay for the whole expander die set-up and

the price is right!!! Current Price $6.42 Listed as "RCBS COWBOY EXPANDER ASSEMBLY"

I've bought several in the past.

THANKS

I emailed RCBS through their website and they sent me a "cowboy" expander free of charge.
