I just got a lyman 2cavity. what I'm encountering is the sprue not dropping off of the cutter plate without beating on the mold handles. It looks as if the edges of the holes have about a 1/32+ flat edge, would sharpening this help?

Yap the pour hole needs to be a knife edge to cut clean and that will help the sticky spru, also the surface of the countersunk area need a good finish.

Remove the plate then sharpen the pour hole with a countesink at low RPM in a drill press, clamp the plate to a 1X4 then the table as the CSK will try grab the plate and jurk it out of your hand, go slow, use some oil while cutting, after that you need to stone the bottom of the plate as the countersink will roll a burr out the bottom, that burr needs to be removed.

And make the spru thicker so it will knock off when you open the plate.
Heavier sprus knock off easier.
