New to the site here... this is my first post.

There is a lot of 45-70 info out there and not near as much for the 45-90. I do not intend to shoot hot or near max loads, I would like to start with loads that duplicate or are somewhere close to black powder pressure/vel. If I was to use the 45-70 loads as a starting point to load the 45-90, does anyone see any problems? I am using a modern Winchester 1885.

Has anyone tried IMR 4064 or IMR 4895 for the 45-90 with a 500 gr cast? If either worked OK I would appreciate a starting point. I intend on trying the 5744 when I find some local without having to pay shipping and haz mat charges.

I don't mind working up my own loads, I am mostly worried about having to little powder in the case as I am aware that can cause some hi pressure problems with the slow burning powders.

I have loaded 45-90 brass with 5744 using 31 gr and a 400 gr bullet. It worked fine in my 1886 Winchester. I have used 4895 in a 45-70 for hot loads (54 gr) but I would think that if you took a trapdoor load and increased it a couple of grains it would suit for a good starting load in a 45-90.

Fill the case with Trailboss to the base of the bullet, don't compress it, and you'll be very close to BP velocity and just a little higher in pressure. No problem for your rifle.

Definitely more pressure. I shot about 100 that way using new starline brass. It really pushed the brass out to the wall clear down to the web. Shot some with Black powder and couldn't even get the neck to push out to the chamber wall

size of the case was .504 just above the base web compared to .500 on ones shot with BP or 4759.

Neck at top was .504 compared to .503 for the BP ones.

Lyman's 49th has smokeless loads for .45-90. It does not cover any of the powders you've listed though.

In addition to XMP-5744, you'd probably get good results with SR-4759. Trailboss might work well, I haven't tried it in .45-90 though. Just .45-70. Pressure definitely runs higer than any BP pressures I've seen published. And velocity is generally going to be a bit lower too.

Personally I'd recommend a full case of Goex. That always makes me smile :Fire:

Ok not too many responses... I plan on using 45-70 data, somewhere between starting load and max load data, for starting loads in my 45-90. I will post results if anyone is interested.

OK, I am aware this thread is one year old but I would really like to know how these loads worked out? Am I too late?

Ive had my best smokless powder accuracy with AA-3100 or 4831 powder in my 45/70 with a saeco 540 gr bullet. i tried about 7 other popular powders for the 45/70 and thats what worked best for me & my rifle. 2 1/2 inch 25 shot group at 200 yards with a scope

I need info on loading the 45/90 with smokeless and a 500 gr cast bullet. I am leaning toward H4895 since it looks, according to the load data, like a fairly low pressure load in 45/70 but I have no experience using it in either the 45/70 or 45/90. I want a smokeless load for this round and I will not use BP, no offense meant to those who do but although I use it in my ML I just don't want to use the stuff in my cartridge rifles.

What was the style of your 540 grain cast? Plain base or gas checked and what alloy? I am looking for a smokless load to use in my Roller in 45/70. I commonly shoot BP in it but there are times I could use a good smokless load.
Thanks

I'm shooting a 515 grain Lyman 457125CV in my .45-90 Winchester 1885 hiwall with 27 grains IMR4198 topped with 3.1 cc cornmeal for a BP equiv load @ 1296 fps av vel.
