The Press that an individual may use is dependent upon the outcome that one desires to achieve. So I ask this for a simple reason as to why you would ask this question?

The Press is your main reloading component. Thus one has to decide for themselves how much of what type of ammo they wish to load for and pick a press that would best serve there needs.

Single Stage- Great for rifle or low volume loading. The New Lee Classic Cast Press is the one I would get for this and they will not break the bank.

Turret Press- Good for higher volume loading with the ability to keep Die's set up in a Turret Head for fast change out.Such as the Lyman T-Mag Or a Redding or even RCBS has them. Manual index

Semi-Auto Turret Press-Lee Classic Cast Turret Press I feel the best bang for the buck on the market bar none. Has auto index or can be used as a single stage as well. This is the press I use as I do not do high volume reloading but can be set up to load 1 to 200 rounds per hour for pistol if one wishes to do so.

Progressive Press-For higher volume loading in the 400 plus rounds per hour rate such as the Dillon 450-550 or the Hornady LNL.

to Full Auto Progressive Press. For higher volume than the other previously mentioned press such as the Dillon 1050.

Forgive me if I left some out. :)

I bought a Rockchucker in 1972 because that was what was recommended to me by a man for whom I had high regard who worked in the "local" gun shop out on John's Island, SC, when I was stationed in Charleston. Until one month ago, it was my only press.

I bought one of those big Lee cast iron "O" frame presses a couple of weeks ago because, a) it's bigger, just in case, b) I like cool tools and the mechanism fascinated me, c) two single stage presses came in handy for my "work flow" and d) I felt like it.

I'm circling a Hornady AP and am about to land on it (vs. the Dillon) because that's what my local gun shop chum carries, and I've listened to it work.

But, the Rockchucker has done all I asked of it, and saw me through my learning curve.

1-Lee Pro 1000 dedicated for 45 Colt only.

Wally I agree the old Rockchucker is a good press but is no longer made in the USA. The Lee Classic Cast Single Stage is a better press and at a better price and IS made in the USA.

And I also agree for learning there is nothing better than a single stage but to be honest that was in years past. The New Lee Classic Cast Turret Press can be used as a turret or single stage. And you can keep the Die's set up without having to remove them and replace them for each operation as you would have to do with a traditional single stage. Plus the Lee Classic Cast Turret press is $40.oo cheaper than an RCBS Rockchucker. And again with the Lee Classic Cast Turret Press you can go from Single Stage to a semi auto Turret press in less than a minute.

I have not been reloading all that long. And like so many others I started with a Single stage press. But I sure wish the Lee Classic Cast Turret Press was around when I started would have saved me money and time. :)

The first press was a C-H 3 station "H" press, then a Rockchucker, then a C-H "C" press, then a Dillon 550, a Dillon 450, a Dillon Square Deal, finally another C-H "H" 3 station press. I have since sold all but the Rockchucker & the Swage-O-Matic in the last 2 years. James

Lee 1000 (2), Lyman T-mag II, Lee Challenger, Lyman All American, Lyman Tru-Line Jr., Dillion 650, RCBS RCII. The Lee 1000's I use for 380 and 9mm only, The Dillon is set up for 44 mag but I am going to change it to 45 ACP and leave it that way. The RCBS was set up with a piggyback progressive for 357 but I took that apart it will become my single stage go to press. The Lyman T-Mag used to be my go to press everything else but I am now using the Lyman All American for that. The Tru-Line Jr. I just use to hold a Lyman No. 55 powder measure. and the Lee Challenger is the press I take to the range when working on loads. Having multiple presses is nice but they take up a lot of bench space, I don't have a large space for reloading only about 8x8 feet. I need to do something about more bench space.

I have the old Hollywood press that I bought used from one of my college professors in 1963 for $25.00, including a set of Hollywood .30-06 dies. I also have an RCBS Rockchucker, a Hornady LNL and a Magma Case Master Jr. I also have a MEC 9000GN for loading shotgun shells.

I've worn out one Rockchucker, which RCBS replaced at no charge, and one Hornady Pro-Jector, which Hornady rebuilt at no charge. I gave the Pro-Jector to my gun dealer for getting me the LNL at his price, and he's using it now.

The old Hollywood is still working just as good as it did when I brought it home in 1963. I load 31 different calibers at the present time, plus 12 ga. shotgun, so I have uses for all my presses.

Hope this helps.

If they all got burned tonight I would replace the two Reloaders and get a Lee Classic Cast single stage instead of the RC and a Lee Classic Turret instead of the Lyman turret. THAT'S the significant info here; not what we actually have but what we would replace it with after considering what we've learned since we got what we did!

An RCBS RC, about half of an RCBS A2 (garage sale find, no idea what happened to the rest of it), a Lyman T-Mag, a couple of Pacific C's, and old Bair C, a couple of Lee hand presses, seems like there is one or two more. Half interest in a Dillon 550.

Have the Lyman set up here at home, and a C out in the shop. I think the hand presses are both in my portable kit, the Dillon is at my brother's, and the rest of the C's are loaners for new loaders. I want to gradually get Lyman/Ideal 310s for some of the more-used calibers.

Two Lee Pro 1000's
One Lee Classic Turret
One Lee Reloader (the cheapie $30 single-stage)

One Pro 1000 does .38 Special and .357 Magnum. Eventually I'll also use it for 9mm (same primer size). This press has about 10,000 rounds on its clock.

The other Pro 1000 does .44 Spl/Mag and .45 Long Colt (same shell plate, #11). This press has at least 2,000 rounds under its belt.

The Classic Turret did a lot of .38 Spl and .45 LC before I went progressive, and I still use it for that purpose to try smaller runs of experimental loads. But its real purpose is down the road, when I start reloading deer rifle rounds. This press could survive a nuclear blast, I think.

The $30 Lee Reloader Press is used for boolit sizing, universal decapping, and *all* initial load development. This is also the press that I started with before I went Turret and Progressive.

If I had to pick *one* and only *one*, it'd be the Lee Classic Turret for its amazing versatility. Fortunately, though, I don't have to do that. :-)

The Dillon 550 and 650 feed IPSC and Steel Plate guns. The SDB is fitted for 9mm and is seldom used. The 550 loads .45-70 and .223 rifle rounds but most of the rifle is in small enough volume that it's not worth setting up a progressive press. Gotta have at least 100; preferably 200 rounds to mess with a progressive. One of the Jr presses was my first press, bought used around 1982. I got the 550 in 1991. I find a single stage to be a real benefit even with teh high volume pistol rounds, especially for load development and fixing minor problems like a primer pulling back into the pocket after being punched out.

The single stage presses, powder measures and case prep equipment are all mounted on 1/2"x6"x12" steel plates with matching bolt patterns. There are brass threaded inserts in the bench top so the tools are easily removed and swapped around to suit what I'm doing. The Dillons are on another bench and are not moved around.

RCBS Jr2 is the only press I've ever had, bought it new over 30 years ago. I've put my money into dies, have over 40 die sets currently. I load everything from 9x18MAK to 45-70 on this. It has never had a home, just clamped to whatever surface is available.

Now that my son has a job (started today, Praise God!) by fall I should have a room for reloading. I will then probably invest in a Lee Classic Turret.

jhrosier
04-12-2010, 07:25 PM
I used a Bair press for the first ten years.
When I wore out the ram, it got replaced by a Rockchucker that is used for almost all of my rifle loading. The Rockchucker is about thirty years old but doesn't show any signs of wearing out in the next couple of lifetimes.

I have been using a Lyman All American turret press for most all of my handgun loading since I bought it back in the early 70s.

My Dillon SDB hardly ever gets used because it is such a PITA to change calibers.

I also have a RCBS ammo master in case I need some serious power, like forming .22 hornet from 45-70 in one pass.:)

I might replace the Lyman AA with a Lee classic cast turret press this year. The Lyman is still going strong but sometimes I just want a new toy.

I also have a Lee hand press that gets used mostly for light duty sizing of handgun cases during the winter if the cellar is too cold or I want to watch some tv upstairs while catching up on some loading.

Blammer, carefull there mate, I think that you might be loading a ZINC wheel weight.

I am currently using a Dillon 550b, a Redding T-7, and a Seaco Lube/Sizer. Hidden away in the cupboard there is a Simplex "O" frame (pretty much an exact copy of the RCBS Rockchucker), and a Lee Ammomaster.

Started with a Lee Breech Lock Challenger Kit. Moved on to a Lee Classic Turret press.

I reload .223/5.56mm,6.8 SPC,30/30 WCF,7.62mmx39mm,and .308 Winchester. Rifle calibers are done single stage on the turret press. Powder charges are set either with the Lee Perfect Powder Measure or a RCBS Chargemaster 1500.

Semi-progressively, I reload .380 ACP,.38 Special,9mm Luger,.357 Magnum,.40 Smith and Wesson, and .45 ACP.

The Classic Turret handles all this with aplomb. My breach lock press will probably be used with Lee Sizer Kits once I start casting (hopefully this Friday).

I do have a Lee Pro 1000 in 9mm that I don't use anymore, I'm faster with the Turret press, because I don't have to keep stopping to fix primer feed issues (yes CowboyT I've cleaned it, thanks for the vids BTW). When I get going well, I can load around 250-275 rounds an hour easily. One of these days I'll have to post a vid of my method.

Not to brag too much on the Classic Turret press, I've looked at my primer, powder, and ammunition inventory and I've figured out that I've loaded so far: 12,000 rounds 9mm, 500 rounds .380 (brass is the limiting factor here), 4000 rounds 40 cal, 600 rounds .45 (don't shoot this much), 1200 rounds of .38 special, 550 rounds .357 magnum (for Dad, loves his Blackhawk) 200 rounds of 30/30, and surprisingly over 1500 rounds of match grade .308 (must be why I'm getting better at F-class). 670 rounds of match grade 5.56mm (I have tons of mil surplus M193 from when it was cheap, I've only loaded 50 rounds of 7.62x39 (hunting ammo lots of Wolf on hand for blasting), and my 6.8 spc load development will commence at the end of the month when my upper arrives.

I'm looking at a Lee Load All II for 12 guage, I'd like to load some buckshot for practice and tactical type classes, I don't want to use my premium Federal Tactical stuff on steel targets. Maybe casting my own would be fun!!!!

I used to have four presses; now I only have three. I traded my first press (RCBS Partner) to a fellow forum member for some linotype a few months back.

RockChucker II does all my rifle stuff, some pistol (small batches) and all depriming. I deprime and tumble my cases before loading.
http://www.goodrichfamilyassoc.org/downloads/RockChucker%20II.jpg

RCBS Ammomaster does most of the pistol stuff. It may do my 22-250 in the future too depending on the volume needed.

MEC 9000G 12 gauge. That thing has loaded many thousands of trap loads for me.

My small lot --
A small C&H C press using ram shellholders --

Herters #3 for most work -

Lachmiller -- Kept in reserve -- very close copy of the herters, rather herters is a copy of the lachmiller - nice that the shellholders are the same

Since lachmiller had no priming feature, a nice lachmiller bench primer is in service. I do believe RCBS modified and kept it in their line after acquiring lachmiller-

Almost forgot -- Lyman Tong (310)

Pacific Super Deluxe C bought mid '63. (This is the one that gets used.)
Lee reloader bought the week that press was introduced. (sizing and priming)
Lyman 310 in half a dozen calibers. (In a drawer in my camper.)
Lee Loaders in half a dozen different calibers. (In the same drawer.)
Lee 4-hole Turret. ( Getting used more and more as it becomes more familiar.)

Dillon XL650. Loading for 45acp, 9mm and 223 remington. Started out w/just the basic XL650 press and added the auto-case feeder system later on. Dillon equip does cost more than a lot of presses/equip out there but their no bs warranty and customer service are tops. I also like their pistol dies as you can easily remove/replace the seating die stem to clean the die w/out losing your setting. Actually kind of wish I would have been the guy that invented them.

Currently I have on my bench a RockChucker (rifle), a Lee Classic Cast (pistol) and a Lee "C" Frame press for decapping and bullet sizing duties. On my other bench I have a Lyman 4500 "C" clamped to it, also have a MEC Sizemaster in 12ga. that was given to me on the floor that also gets clamped on when needed. Have another MEC that has been cannabalized for parts, but I use it for 20ga. loading (yes it turns out a nice shell).

I decided to take the Co-Ax plunge. The companion A2 is a recent gift from a good chum with whom I build rifles. What a monstah! (The press, not the chum.)

I make long and short handles with 1.5" phenolic balls for each press. (Haven't gotten to the A2 yet.)

Started with a Rockchucker and a couple yrs later bought a Lyman Spar-T turret. I drilled/tapped the turret and added a handle like the newer Lyman turret...the handle was a great improvement over grabbing the turret. Been using it about 15 yrs and still happy with it...but If I ever upgrade it will be a Redding turret.

A RCBS Rockchucker.............35+ years. Rifle calibers.
A Lee Pro 1000.....................10 years. Pistol Calibers.
And a virgin Hornady LNL progressive in the process of being set up.
No reason why I use the RCBS for rifles other than I strated out reloading rifles long before pistols and it is just the way it has stayed.

Rockchucker - everything.
Dillon 1050 - .45 ACP
Dillon 650 - .40S&W, .223, .308
Redding T-7 - .338 Lapua
Hollywood Sr. Turret - .50 BMG
RCBS Ammomaster - .50 BMG
Lyman Tmag II - .50AE, .38 & .357
Dillon SL900 - 12ga.

I got my Rockchucker about 25 years ago, I can't fill in the dates on the others - they came between then and now. I think the Redding T-7 is the newest, and I've had it since they came out (6 years?).

I've gotten rid of a few presses along the way, for various reasons, but I'm quite happy with the presses I currently own, for the use I put 'em to.

I've three Hornady LNL's that are workhorses, tools, good accurate and wouldn't be without them. But my real presses (my true passion is loading and shooting centerfire rifle, one at a time) is a newer Lee Classic Cast, and a semi-retired 1985 model Lee Challenger. By the way the ammunition loaded on the new, stronger, and better quality press is in no way any better than the stuff loaded for years on the Challenger.

I'm surprised there was only one other person with a RCBS Pro 2000 (unless I missed some). Its a great press. Mine is setup the equivalent of a 6 station press (I replaced the RCBS dedicated powder dropper with a Lee Powder thru the Die).

Station one: sizes/deprimes
Station two: bells/primes/drops powder
Station three: powder check die
Station four: seats the bullet
Station five: factory crimp die

As if that is not enough, it uses the fantastic APS primer system.

A complete caliber change (including changing size of primer) takes less than 5 minutes (could probably be done in half that, but I clean up the press when changing over).

My tools are a Lee hand press and a Lee Loader (not a real press, I know).

Forster Co-ax: I load almost all bottleneck cartridges on this.
Dillon 550B: I use this for high volume (at least for me) loading. A long time ago that meant .44 magnum, now it's mostly .45acp and 9mm.
Redding T-7: I use this for handgun I don't shoot in great quantity and some rifle.

It all started with a Rockchucker twenty some years ago.

*Dillon 550B for pistol
*C-H 444 for one rifle caliber at a time
*Hollywood Senior as the 'goto' press for neck sizing and some FL resizing
*Lyman All-American for bullet seating
*C-H Magnum H/111 for FL resizing
*Herters Super 3 for decapping

I also got started on a RCBS RC, but it got lost in a move and after using the 444, 111, and Senior, I not only don't miss it, I have no intention of looking for it.
