I have an old Ideal Single Cavity 431244 GC Mould and the GC is a bit tough to put on so I was thinking I would turn this into a plain base.

Any thoughts on this? Thank You

Have you tried it w/o using gaschecks? More than likely it will perform well and you can always opt to use with gas checks, shoudl you be so moved.

I find gas checked bullets to be a bit more accurate and I get less fouling using them. I bought a Freechex tool to make my own out of aluminum---so the cost is negligible. I now use them even with my .44 Special loads.

I had the gas check shank removed from a 431244HP mould a few years back and found that the remaining lube groove was not sufficient. It only held about .4 grains of lube. I then had the mould "scalped" to remove some of the base length and of course making the boolit lighter, about 230g, and that seems to have helped. I still get occassional minor leading with faster powders like Green Dot and Unique, but almost no leading with 2400 or WC820 loads. What leading I do experience is easily removed by firing 5 rounds of gas checked 429215 boolits with a charge of 18g of 2400.
