Does anyone have any experience with Mountain Molds? I just bought a mold from them and was wondering if you were happy with what you got...

Dan does excellent work. I've had 5 molds made by him and each one has been right on spec diameter or .0005 over. They cast so well that when you start and think you'll only need 50 or so you instead end up casting an entire pot.

His turn around time is pretty good lately too as it seems like around a month or a bit less so it isn't too bad of a wait time either.

Have fun when it arrives, I always do.

I hate the online mold design, I stay up all night playing with that thing, I need a support group. I have one mountain mold and plan on more. The one I have works great

I know exactly what you mean! The online mold design feature is a real time-stealer!

I have 2, one brass, one aluminum, and both are real keepers! They were made for 2 specific rifles and no other boolit produces as good results.

I have 3 at this point 1 brass and two aluminum and all are great moulds. I would not hesitate to get another if I could just decide on what.

I have one that I use for my 10mm. It is a joy to use. Very highly recommend.

Just received my MM aluminum 2-cavity. Probably only took three weeks or so from the time I ordered it. It's my first from him, and it casts wonderfully (every bit as good as the LBT's I have).

I will be buying from him again!

I probably have 7 of them and happy with all except one. It casts about .003 over what ordered. Don't use it much. All the others are great. Wouldn't hesitate ot order another one.

MM = excellent molds. I have several. Have been able to custom design molds for rifles where currently mass produced molds weren't adequate at best or at worst very, very poor.

Effort in - reward out as far as the details required and time spent on the design program. Otherwise just order a one-size-fits-all mold from Lee, Lyman, RCBS.

The only thing the MM design program and/or Dan's equipment can't do are roundballs and small diameter roundnose or spire point conicals simply because of the mechanical nature of the lathe-bore system. Having said that, within the larger diameter bullets, unless they are really long, the minimum meplat allowed provides plenty of design leeway for higher BC/streamlined design if that is desired.

I got my mold in last week and starting tinkering with it last night. Looks like it's gonna work out really well. I'll try to upload a photo of the finished product.

bbailey7821:

It looks like you need more heat as there are wrinkles in that bullet standing on end; hard to tell from pictures sometimes though. The MM's I have produce their best bullets from 790-800 degrees.

Yup, I noticed that, too. Like I said, it was day 1 with this setup. I'll take the advice and and turn up the heat... Thanks for the input! I'm just really pumped that I get to cast my own for my monster. My 4 5/8! Casull is a real trip to shoot! Thanks and Take Care!

It could be not enough heat but it also could be flow rate or head pressure. Have you taken the temperature of the melt and pre-heated your mold? Are you using a dipper? You should also show us your bases before installing the gas checks.
