I was thinking of a wildcat, but am now considering a 7.62x39 for a CB bench gun. Don't need another hunting rifle. I'd only use it for shooting cbs at targets from a bench. I've looked at the MiniMauser and CZs, seem kinda small/light for what I want. Could I have a Savage .308 set back and rechambered? Does anybody make one ready to go? Ideas for a poor man's 7.62x39 cast bench gun? Single shot is fine, don't need a magazine for what I have in mind, that paper waits for me to reload. Maybe rebarrel an old Rem. 700?

I like the idea of the Savage pretty easy to change barrels, buy a new barrel chamber for whatever you like if you need or want to pull the new barrel off and reinstall the old. You can do this yourself if properly set up.

The 7.62x39 has an odd size rim, which takes a non-standard bolt face. I think you'd have to dump a fair amount of money into a Remington 700 or Savage to get it to work. If I had my heart set on a 7.62 x 39 benchrest gun, I'd try to find a used 22 PPC or 6mm PPC as a starting point.

Good afternoon
I do know the hammer forged-rifled CZ barrels can be very accurate. Most acurate Cal .30 rifle I have ever owned is my 30-06 interarms. It shoots 125 grain to 220 gr at less than MOA. The Danville Rifle Pistol Club in the state of ILL used to have the National Guard Range. We had 500 yards with nice benches. That rifle would shoot the 168 Sierras to 3.5 " at 500 yards all day long. We now only have 300 meters But that rifle will do 2" without a hiccup if I remember to do my part.

Don't mean to disagree with anyone but a 7.62 X 39 will work just fine on a standard .308 bolt head. Benchrest shooters switch back and forth all the time.

Depends on the gun. A Rem or Savage won't pull it out of the chamber. But Fred at Sharp Shooter makes bolt heads for the Savage in the right size, as well as longer extractors to allow you to use your 308 bolt. For Rem I convert them to Sako extractors, takes some work but is slick once it's done.

Poking around on the benchrest sites (not my game, had to do some searching) I find that some custom actions do indeed have universal boltfaces that will take both PPC (grandson of 7.62x39) and .308 cases. However, pulling a M700 out of the safe, I found that the standard extractor (mine at any rate) doesn't grab enough of the PPC case to hang on to it. I can't speak for the Savage, as I don't have one at hand.

Thanks guys, I appreciate the input. I'll have to really think this thru as it will be a once in a lifetime deal, I think. Speaking of poor man's BR gun, didn't somebody make an adaptor to shoot 7.62x39 in a 30-06? Or am I remembering that wrong? I agree the CZs are very accurate, I have a 30-06. Hey, I just remembered something, I use to have an Interarms MiniMauser .223 carbine that was the most accurate rifle I've ever owned. It probably weighed under 6 lbs.! 5 shots under a dime easy at 100 yds with Win. factory HPs. Maybe I'm looking at this BR gun idea all wrong and should rethink the little carbine 7.62x39?

I have had both a factory Ruger 77 and factory #1A in 7.62 x 39 and they would shoot about 1"with good cast loads even with their light barrels. The 7.62 x 39 or 30 Kern (30PPC) with a good chamber is as good as any.The standard 7.62 x 39 in an old Mauser shot a .208 5 shot groups at 100 and held the CBA heavy Class small group record for a number of years. My friend still owns the rifle.

I recently bought a CZ in 7.62X39 and so far have not fired any cast in it but I have fired both Jadketed reloads and factory ammo from my rifle. I am impressed with its accuracy I got sub moa groups with a couple different hand loads and right around moa with russian steel cased jhp ammo. Now that my bore is broken in I plan to use it with cast almost exclusively. In fact I have several different loads all loaded that I plan to shoot as soon as I find time.

Just a suggestion. CDNN has the Remington 799 in 7.62x39 NIB for $400. It's a mini-Mauser action made by Zastava. It should be easy enough to have the barrel changed to a heavy version. It may even shoot well enough that changing barrels wouldn't be necessary.

I did see the CDNN add for $400, it's driving me nuts. I really want one, but...

I understood the 799 had a crush thread on the bbl making it almost impossible to rebarrel.

Mines a real tack driver but suffers a bit from one weakness. The extractor works fine and allways pulls the case out but the ejector doesnt allways eject the shell even when working the action hard. Anyone else have the same problem and is there a fix short of sending it in to ruger?

I picked up a Ruger Hawkeye compact in 7.62x39 last fall and it functions just fine, darn accurate too. I wish it had a 20" barrel like my Charles Daly has, that 16" is just too short.

Well, Lloyd, my guess is that the ejector slot on your bolt got cut to the standard .308 depth, and that is why the ejector won't pop in far enough to eject the cases reliably. The ejector could be short too, but unfortunately, I doubt that. Sounds like you have a 7.62 x39 bolt face on a .308 bolt........ it's happened.
