in 7.62x54R and it was terrible. Boolits were key holing and groups looked like they came from a shotgun. I tried slugging the barrel many moons ago, but it turned into a nightmare. I'm using the LEE .303 boolit sized .314w/GC and 13.0 to 13.5 gr. Red Dot. Have decided to try slugging the barrel again. This time using softer lead and cutting the wooden dowels into short lengths. I really want to use the Red Dot powder as I have two pounds of it. Any thoughts????

WILCO, I had pretty good luck with it. My data shows 13 grains Red Dot with 311407MOD sized to .314, ACWW. These were in Graf cases with CCI 200 primers lubed with 2500+. It was a 2 1/2", ten shot group at 50 yards with the issue sights. I was happy with that because I can't see worth a hoot anymore...Ray

P.S. in a model 91/30

Instead of going through the hassle of slugging the bore; try this instead. Measure the inside of a caseneck from one of the cartridge cases fired in your rifle. Then size your boolit to .001" below that measurement.

This method gives you the largest diameter boolit that will safely chamber and fire in your rifle.

Hope this helps,

What Dutch said. The 13.0 RD is starter load, you may need to tweak it. Bu t, it works for me in about everything. Solve your fit issue and you should do better. Get the barrel clean too.
