In this world there may be artistic creations made of wood that are even more pleasing to the eye than a well finished, nicely character-ed rifle stock but I can't think of any. I have never been able to warm up to plastics for use as a stock, it's just not the same. As a result, when I purchased a nice Remington 700 in 270 Win with a plastic stock I immediately went in search of a wooden replacement. At a gun show in Peoria I lucked into a very rough looking semi-inletted chunk of wood for a Rem. 700. I gave the guy $40 for it, he said he thought it might be Birdseye maple but was too dirty to tell for sure. Here's what a months worth of hard work can do.
