I think I will need to replace the front sight on my Ruger 45 Colt. With my 300gr cast loads it is shooting about two feet high at 50yds.Who sells original type replacements?

May be easier to replace the rear sight. I put a Bowen rear sight on my New Blackhawk 45 Colt. I can shoot point of aim at 25 yards with the 300 gr and the rear sight all the way down.

You were lucky Rico 1950, most won't do that. I called Bowen on one of my new model rugers and they advised their rear sight didn't have enough adjustment to lower my heavy weights enough. The best solution was to replace the front sight, which isn't cheap if you do it right the first time. I haven't done mine yet, I'm trying to sell it.:)

.595 height front sight from Brownells. All my 45's and 44's get em before I ever shoot them. I like to be able to aim at a 1/2 inch spot at 25 yards and hit. All the Ruger SA's I have ever owned needed a taller front sight. Its a simple enough task to heat and remove the front sight and solder on the new.

before you throw a handful of bucks at sights or a gunsmith to remount front sight, pretty easy solution, though not the absolute best, is to take a std ruger rear sight blade and knock about .020-.030 off the top of it and deepen the notch by the same amount, enabling another bit of elevation reduction at minimal cost. and you can always replace that blade for a couple of bucks from brownells.
by the way, the std sight unit will definitely get down lower than every bowen i've put on (4 total)-even after knocking a bit of the stub inside the sight track down with a narrow, safe edge file. the bowen just has a hard time getting there. i've got a stainless 45 colt bisley and picked up a sight blade blank from bowen and reshaped it to basic patridge dimension, regulated it to shoot heavy bullets pretty slow, crossdrilled it and i'm good to go, but that's a lot more straightforward on a stainless gun than blue. take your time, whatever you do.

I have a 45/8ths 45 colt that is going back today for sight replacement. The gun shoots over a foot high at 25 yards with the rear 15 clicks off bottom.
I believe if I would have had my hands on the neck of the loon that put a short sight on mine I would have choked him out.
Now 4 to 6 weeks for the repair.

It doesn't look like you have a pin to hold that blade in? I thought they all had pins.

Yes it is stainless with a pinned sight. It is also 4 5/8" barrel.I saw the sights at Brownells but didn't know what hieght I would need.It looks simple enough to knock out the pin and change the sight. Thanks guys, I will order from Brownells this weekend and I'll update when I get it installed.

from memory, you'll still have to use a brand new .062(1/16th) drill to match drill the blade to the base. go slow and measure twice. do it wrong and the blade will either sit up off the base or not match up for a really tight fit. you might even have to shave a 1000th or three off the bottom width of the blade for proper fit.
i just measured my 45 ss/5.5" bisley and blade is .450 above ramp and right at .600 above barrel, this with bowen sight bottomed out and shooting 285gr swc's with 11.5 of hs6. go with highest blade you can, which i think is for 45 colt and proceed with regulating to heaviest bullet you want to shoot, going the slowest you want to shoot it. and after all that, it may/may not be accurate at reduced velocity, but you've at least got the sight at the furthest end of practical application possible. you can always cut 'em down, but it's hard to make 'em grow taller.

Several folks I know replace all of their Blackhawk front sights with the one intended for the 4-5/8" guns, as it is the tallest of the factory sights.
