I finally got to shoot my 303 Gallery or Cat Sneeze Load

.315 Hornady Back Power Ball

1 grains shot 10 inchs low

2 grains 700x worked good shot at point of aim ( Reduced to 1.6 grains Still shoots good no drop)
New brass

I just push the ball in the case

Nickel size group at 11 yards or 33ft

22 trap stopped them easily with no movement

About as loud as a 22

Brass was very shooty and dirty (probably because they are short)

Does any one have a .315 round ball mold to sell or know where I can get one

update 4/5/10
I took some . 319 round ball from Masscaster
Alox them ran them through a Lee .314 sizer

3 shot group was dime size
4 shot group is nickel size
This was fun

Probably Epay........sorry to say. Sounds like fun though. Did you have to put in any sort of wadding (not filler) such as a piece of tp to hold the powder close to the primer?

I just checked Dixie Gun Works and they list at least three .31 caliber molds, ranging from about 25 to 55 bucks.

You do mean grains, not grams, of 700-X, don't you? 30.8 grains of 700-X would be a real rip-snorting load for a .30 caliber roundball.

Oh my yes, thanks for the heads up

I just tilt the round up before loading

3 gr. of Alliant BE works good with a .311 ball in an '03.
Haven't done it in a while as I don't have spare primers.

I had similar results with 2 gr of greendot and a lyman cast .310 . I didn't like how low they hit as I want to use these to pot grouse while hunting deer with the .303 . I have a cartridge adapter that fire .32 acp and again it hits really low, I want to come up with something that hits high enough to use the regular sight settings but not tear up to much meat on a grouse , the research will continue

You'll probably have to go to a heavier bullet (90-100 grains) at about 1000 fps before you get past excessive bullet drop, even at short ranges. I'll look in my notes to see if I recorded the sight settings for the more accurate .303 gallery loads. I believe Ken Waters came up with a 4.0 - Unique - 90-gr Hornady LSWC load that shot well at 25 yards. That charge and the Speer 100-gr WC or the 90-gr. Hornady WC was very accurate out to 50 yards in my rifle. 3.5- Bullseye - 95-gr "no name on the bullet" LSWC worked well at 25 yards for me. I think if you use a hard bullet to eliminate expansion and keep the velocity down, you won't vaporize too much meat. Muzzle blast was minimal with these loads; sometimes much less than a .22 LR.

EDIT: 90-gr. Hornady WC - 4.0 - Unique - 2.610" COL - 600 yds = 3" high at 50 yds. (Waters has the 90-gr SWC at 907 fps for the same powder charge)

100-gr. Speer WC - 5.0 - Unique (not 4.0, this is why I keep notes) - 2.680" COL - 575 yds = POA at 50 yds. This one should probably be cut down to 4.0 grs. Unique.

98-gr. Magtech LRN - 4.0 - Unique - 2.610" COL. This is a good bullet in the 7.62x54mmR, too.

Size 0 buckshot is available. I think Masscaster has rb's at pretty reasonable prices.

Gallery and cat sneeze loads are different. Gallery loads are for practice with accuracy using lighter than normal loads where the "art " of shooting is the goal.

Cat sneeze loads are those quiet, deadly loads developed for stealth use as in suburban pest control.

Some may use them interchangeably, as in the 32-20 bullet in a 303, or the RB load in a 303.

Search for Jeff Tanner moulds for a RB mould to your desired dimension, priced reasonably.

For both loads use full full power fired cases so that the next very low power iteration seals the chamber most easily. For cat sneeze or true gallery loads, open the primer flash holes a bit, use soft and a little oversized RB or bullets, and fast powder, lube too. If it's gallery you are after seek accuracy. If it's whacking the possum off your babrecue grill on the deck, seek quiet and effectiveness.

Don't plan on the semi functioning or on much distance with accuracy. Junior's RB loads were gallery loads for squirrel shooting or close practice cheaply, 30 yards or so @ 1"+.

Good shooting , BvT
