i picked up the above rifle...i have never seen one with a blonde stock....rare upgrade, what ???

Did you mean a Blonde stock, as in light colored?

I have seen a few with very light hued wood.

I've seen several 99s with blonde stocks over the years. I think Savage made some of the later rifles with hardwood stocks to lower the price.

Its made of birch. Cheaper to produce than walnut.

Savage used an opaque Walnut stain on Birchwood stocks for the Model 99E's of the 1970's (+/-) - which many owners stripped off during a refinish.

If the stripped Birch wasn't re-stained, and just Tru-Oiled or poly'd, the stock would take on a yellow/Maple/blonde color.

One way to tell is it clip fed or the old rotary magazine. the detachable magazine was found on later rifles. Also they were often made in 308 based calibers.
