I have a 1949 336A
I want to shoot in the local Silly Wet Matches with reduced loads and also load for Hunting.
Do these look like good Bullets for the 30-30 ?
Also want to use them in the 03A3

I was shooting 30-30 in my contender pistol (14 inch) today with 309 sized cast, lubed bullets, both with and without GCs.

I used Trailboss, it shot great and was plenty accurate (3 inch group at 100 yard with iron sights). I bet with a scope that would tighten up quite a bit. Only very slight reco

Edit: Just saw these are Spire Points (i.e., not flat point). You should not use pointed bullets in a tube fed lever action. Dropping the gun could cause the point to ignite the primer of the next round.

Thanks:
The first pic is of his 170gr. Flat Nose that I would use for the 30-30
I would only use the 185gr. Spire Point in the 03A3

I just started castin for my microgrooved 336, I chose the 150 fngc boolit lee offers & so far with reduced loads they do good sized to .310 around 1200fps.

I got some checked & loaded in the `06 to be tested

I put a pic in the thread but here it is again.

gp100man, what kind of accuracy you gettin' with those lee150gr. is that a good load what the box says 7gr. clays? i shoot alot of the lee 170gr. over 7gr. unique seems to work perty good.:D

The spire points look great, but you'll have a hard time getting any accuracy over about 1,500-1,600FPS. That long unsupported nose will tend to get cocked sideways in the bore as chamber pressures increase; and the boolits start wandering all over the place.

I have a Lyman 311413 mold; 169gr GC spire point boolit that looks great too - but accuracy goes out the window above 1,600fps. I get snarky comments about needing new glasses when I shoot those. :razz:

You'd be better off using a "bore rider" type boolit - the nose is the same diameter as the lands in your bore.

If you must go with those, try light loads of IMR 4759; neighborhood of 15gr.

plannin on shootin for groups tomorrow , seems I can`t (have`nt deciplined myself) to shoot for groups over the chrony yet .
gonna try em at fifty yds if I don`t get blown away!!

The 30-30s are runnin 1250 in the marlin microgroove barrel & barebottomed
with 10.5 bhn alloy.

They had good numbers on the chrony with CLAYS & it`s a sight cleaner than Reddot !!

The `06s have 9.5 grs. of700x & I have`nt fired a 1 in the `06 yet , gotta work on gettin all the copper out first!

OK;
My Wife got me the Lyman #49 Manual :)
I Slugged the Bores.

30-30 = .3095 Grooves, .300 Lands
1903A3 = .3085 grooves, .300 Lands

The Bullet I'm thinking of ordering is a 170gr. Flat Nose
Cast .310 with GC and a BHN of 22 - 24

Does this sound good ?

There's another thread like this over on the Levergun forum you should take a look at. I have a micro-groove Marlin 336 and a non-micro '93. The 336 micro likes a .310 boolit. The non-micro '93 likes either a .310 or .311. Almost any boolit shoots great in those 30-30's as long as it's a flat point so as to not be setting off the magazine. I like the Lyman 311041, 311440, or 311407 as well as the Saeco #316 and Lee 150 grain, in no certain order. There's also a ton of lightweight pistol boolits to try in those things. Some guys use 10 grains of Unique and the lightweight 100-120 grainers but I have better luck with no more than 8.0 grains. Blue Dot is also one of my favorites for these light loads.

I have been using the Lyman 311316 GC bullet over 9 grs of Unique in 30-30's for many years. It's a good target and small game load, like shooting a 22.

I've been shooting lever silhouette for about two years now and in my experience the .30-30 can be a little on the light side, even with factory loads. Have only noticed it really on the rams. I've seen 'em take a good hit and then turn, sometimes as much as 90 degrees, but not fall down.

I think the .30-30 will work, just not with anything less than full loads.

gp100man. how was the accuracy with the 150 gr. Lee boolits, with 7.0 gr. of Clays? I just sized a few of those boolits, I would like to see youre results before I load them up.
