I've just acquired a Mauser 71, Danzig, all matching dated 1876 in reasonable external condition for its age nice wood but dings and such like, metal is very good and the bore looks pristine so would make good shooter for someone, however the firing pin is snapped.

How easy to replace/mend?

Suggestions welcome.

Numrich's probably has complete Bolts from "Trade M71 Shotguns"(Post WW I Belgian Conversions for the Colonial Trade), from which a usable F/P could be cannibalized. Sarcoinc.com lists them as Part MSR016 I believe.

Any good Gunsmith could simply make a new Pin tip, socket it into the stub remaining, and silver solder in place.

...............I've got one fo those :-) It really likes the Lyman 475 gr slug intended for the Whitworth and Volunteer muzzle loaders.

Here it is amongst it's peers. I had a very poor camera at the time and could take no closeups, so I felt it was a waste of time to take any detail photo's. I should get it out and take a bunch. The barrel looks as if it'd never been fired.

I have a 71 and am using the Lyman .446" bullet of 8bhn with 21 grs of 2400. Put 2 rounds thry the x ring of the 200 yard military target at 200 yards, 2 others went into the 9 ring.

Had to build up the front sight with Marine Tex epoxy to get it to shoot to point of aim with the lowest blade at 100 yards. The flip up blade is then on at 200 yards.

Welcome to the 71, 71/84 addiction Dromia!
They grow on you .
Soon only 1 will not be enough you know.
They shoot sweet and raise a lot of eyebrows at the range.

Have you slugged the bore yet.
Both of mine are .449 and Buckshot made me a special sizing die for them.

I'm not new to these rifles just this particular example, the Lyman has worked well for me over BP in the past. Will give Buckshots volunteer mould reccomendation a try when I find where I've put it.
