Saeco Green paraffin choice

I'm getting ready to make a batch of Saeco Green (for the first time). I'd like something a bit harder than 50/50 lube which gets too sticky for me in July and August.

In checking the candle wax retailers close by me I see paraffin is sold in different levels of hardness (according to melt temperature). I don't want to get too hard of paraffin so I'm soliciting input for which temp level I should get.

Anyone buy their paraffin by melt temperature and which one did you get?

I never new paraffin came in different hardness levels. I got mine a while back in block form at a local dept store and there was only one choice.

Get the paraffin wax used tor canning, available at most grocery stores as well as wally world, k-mart and alot of other places. It comes in a 1 lb. box. If your lube is too hard, test it before making sticks or putting it in a can for later. Add a small amount more of STP or add vasealine and test again till you get what you are trying for. I make and use Saeco Green in about anything I load for. I tend to up the amount of beeswax and cut back by the same amount on the parafin. I either use candle color or regular crayons for the green color I like, remember these color cubes and crayons are also adding paraffin by the way they are made. I therefore add more beeswax to counter the parafin in these color holders.Robert

I didn't know that either RugerFan, the last paraffin I bought was 5 lbs. from a garage sale for a dollar. I would think that any would work, but you may feel the need to thin it more if it ends up too hard, but that should be easy to do.

Also liquid candlemakers dye is an easy way to color the lube, it's available at most hobby stores or online.

Are you sure the melt temp has a relationship to the hardness at room temp? I didn't see that addressed at your link (but I just scanned quickly so might have missed it). Lead and pure gold are worlds apart meltwise, yet fairly similar in hardness

I'm not sure about that but it's the assumption I made. My problem with 50/50 is it gets too sticky in the summer months.

add some carnuba to the 50-50.
i really like two sticks 50-50 and one stick of carnuba red.
just melt and cool.
iv'e taken it over 2200 fps and no ill effects.
you can add a bit [heaped tesspoonfull] of lanolin or white lithium grease to make a softer more pliable lube with this mix also.
but it is firm enough you need heat to run through your sizer.
