I probably got away with this because i had never reloaded cast boolets before. It has to do with how far i run my expander plug into the case. Up until now i never had a problem with starting a jacketed bullet. I geuss what i need to know is how far past the step on my expander plug do i go?

The smaller diameter of the M-die is the length of the seated bullet and the larger diameter enters the case about .050" to .060". Here is a picture of a Lyman M-die. This is why the M-die is a good idea.

I have an older RCBS die set for my 45-70 and the explander plug on it doesn't flare like how it does for your pistol brass. You might be able to seat a cast bullet with how you are currently flaring your brass.

What is important is that the smaller diameter is only .001" to .002" max smaller then your bullet diameter and at least as long as the seating depth of your bullet before the flair for the case mouth.
