Ok just traded for a really good looking marlin 30AW in 30-30. Yes I know that it started out as a wal mart gun but putting that aside what can you tell me as far as the gun? Accuracy etc. Also it has a micro groove barrel.
Thanks for the input.:bigsmyl2:

Your AW is a short barreled version of my AS.
I love my AS, even tho it was the cheaper vision.

Shoots the same as my cheaper Winchester 94

That is a wild lookin lever on that Marlin, Fred. Is that the standard lever? Are these just Marlin 336s with a cheap finish? Or are there other differences?

All of the Marlin guns are the same on the inside, there's no skimping on the quality of anything. From what I've read over on Marlinowners website is that you have a post front sight instead of a ramp front sight, and your stock is birch instead of walnut. Your gun will function and shoot every bit as good as a 336c.
Lead Fread, correct me if I'm wrong but that gun looks awfully familiar. :bigsmyl2:

You have a 336 with cheaper wood and sights.

2 - 2.5 inch ten shot groups at 100 yards is pretty standard. Individual examples can do better. Sometimes much better.

cumminsnut76, you need to try some differnet loads most of my 336's like 170gr.,but one likes 150gr. better. but 1 1/2" to 3"are the norm. are you gona shoot handloads or factory ammo. last time i bougt a box of 30-30 think they were 9.99.:cbpour:

going to hand load for it. I am also thinking about trying some cast from some guys here on the forum to see if it will eat them somewhat accuratly

:-)the lee 170gr. gc sized to .310 stacked on top of 29gr. i4895 is pretty accurate and stout nuf fer anythang i'll ever come a cross!! but don't use that as a start'n load, start about 26gr. and work up and watch for pressure signs. try different components, and keep good notes and find what works for you.:castmine:

The 30A* were called truck guns. they were beaten like red headed step children.
The 30 and 336 are cousins. Dont really know differences.

I hardly would call the finish on my AS cheap.

The lever is after market. I bought it from http://www.gunpartscorp.com/
But I think the Marlin owners may have bought them all. But you can check
It fits the 30A* and 336.

About 4-6 inches at 100 yards. 1-2 at 50 yards. I didnt like my stock sights, and have not got the new ones to work well yet.

I didn't mean to say ugly cheap, I meant save money cheap. I initially thought that Marlin might finish with a bake on paint or similar, but it is the wood and sights they are saving money on apparently. They don't appear to import these into Oz, which is a pity because one in .35Rem would be a cracker.

Lead Fred...thanks for the link. I happen to love my less expensive Glenfield, no problem...1 to 3 at 125yds with 150g or 170g depending on the wind. Anyone experiment with 110g or 130g ? I would like to know what anyone may be using for powder in the lighter grains...just curious.

I shot a lot of bulk Remington 110 grain JSP intended for the M1 Carbine. I used 30 grains of RL7 for 2440 fps. I had to put a very heavy Lee Factory Crimp on the bullet to get consistent ignition.
