Shot that load in my New Vaquero today and it did well.
Shot 270 RCBS/8.0 Unique/Rem21/2 and it did well too.
Have not shot the 270 RCBS/24.0 H110/WLP S/M yet but will in a few days though.
I like the 270 RCBS/17.0 2400/Rem21/2 though.

I believe that the RCBS 45-270-SAA is one of the great bullet designs available for the .45 Colt. I look at it as it's designer intended (Dave Scoville) as a better "Keith" bullet. Elmer Keith himself wasn't entirely pleased with his design for the .45 Colt (Lyman 453424) and the RCBS seems to have corrected the minor deficiencies of the Lyman.

Don't get me wrong, the original Keith design is good - it's just that the RCBS is better. That is why I picked it for the Group Buy at:

When the group buy ships, We'll all be able to to see how it works in a Hollow Point!

Just checking - is your Vaquero the New Vaquero with the 1.675 diameter cylinder, vs. the original Vaquero diameter of 1.732?

If yours is the smaller, it is not recommended to use Ruger only 45 Colt loads.

It is the NEW Vaquero. Not the Vaquero. There was the Vaquero and now the NEW Vaquero.
It is now a used NEW Vaquero instead of a New NEW Vaquero since it had been fired maybe a couple hundred times.

I also have a hollowpoint version of that bullet cast by my buddy. Cast from 1-16 tin and lead.

This one, right?

http://www.gunblast.com/Ruger-NewVaquero.htm

The closest I could find to your H110 load was 45 Colt Ruger, T/C, Freedom Arms data on the interactive Hodgdon Data Center.

Pardon the formatting, but note the pressure of 27,700 CUP at 23.5 grains and 30,100 CUP at 24 grains.

260 GR. NOS PART Hodgdon H110 .451" 1.650" 23.5 1351 27,700 CUP 24.0 1374 30,100 CUP

The New Vaquero is a nice piece and handier than the full size frame of the original Vaquero, but it does not have the beef to handle the old Ruger only loads.

Dale--

I acquired a couple Ideal/Lyman #454424 moulds from a member here, one each in 1- and 2-cylinder configuration. They differ slightly from one another, not unprecedented in the Lyman line of mould blocks. Both shoot GREAT in my Ruger BisHawk, so they will be staying around.

That said, the boolits they produce seem short and squatty in aspect compared to Keith's #358429 and #429421. The #454424s I cast look more like the diagrams of the #452423 designs once listed by Lyman, to me anyway. The pics I've seen of the RCBS 45-270 look a lot more "Keith-like". If that makes sense.

The solution is obvious--get an RCBS 45-270. And a Model 625 in 45 AR to utilize my pre-existing #454424 tooling. THANK YOU for helping me figure out a way around this dilemma. Cost effectiveness is a much over-emphasized assessment tool, and not germane to the firearms hobbies or their practitioners.

Al;
Thanks for the kind words. I am, "As we speak", about to start loading a bunch of .45 Auto Rim cases with NOE''s clone of the Lyman 454424 for my .45 ACP 625's. My case tumbler has been down (a large Dillon that I have had for nearly thirty years). I got the parts some time ago but had a problem disassembling it. I got that resolved and finished it up last night, then ran a bunch of brass.

Some time ago, I reached the same conclusion about the Lyman Keith 454424. I didn't really realize that until I had an original Lyman four cavity mould. Unfortunately, my Lyman was an older mould (in fine shape) that was cut for a larger bullet than I desired (.456"-.457"). I sold it and had NOE cut me a five cavity mould. I ran some of them again earlier this week. They are FINE bullets but probably better suited to the 625's in .45 ACP.

I agree that the RCBS 45-270-SAA is THE bullet for the .45 Colt. That is why I decided to run this (as I said above).

For your information, The Hollow Point group buy 45-270-SSA is closing in TWO days. Shortly thereafter, I will start a new Group Buy for the same design in a six cavity MiHec mould in solid form. It will be more cost effective to get the hollow point mould (you have both solid AND hollow points with it) but, for me, the sheer efficiency of using a six cavity mould for a bullet I intend to shoot a lot is inescapable. I will have BOTH (and make NO apologies for excess:mrgreen:).

You might as well too[smilie=w:...

P.S. You will LOVE the 625 and wonder why you waited so long...D
