I slugged the bores on both Of my MN-91-30's.....

Both show a OVAL bore of .308 by about .315, am I doing something wrong while slugging or could these rifles have oval bores?

If oval bores are common how do I choose a size for the boolit?

Of course it could have an oval bore! It is an old Ruskie rifle made during a war. Your
lucky the hole goes all the way thru!

OK - I'm kidding a bit. I have not seen an oval bore, but maybe it is a 2 groove bbl which
might be mistaken for an oval bore. Max dimension plus about .003 is what you should
plan on sizing to.

I've heard of oval chamber throats, such as in the Enfields, but not an oval bore on a Mosin. Were it my rifle, I'd just measure the inside diameter of the neck from a casing fired in that rifle; then size the boolits to that measurement or .001" less. Then try 10-13 grains of Unique with a 200 grn g/c'd boolit and see how she shoots!

Hope this helps, :)

Those are some interesting specs.
There are samples of the Moisin rifles that range the full spectrum. From mint to those that look like they were dragged across a gravel road, and then abused.

I suppose with the conditions I just describes, about anything is probable.

I'd shoot it and if it works, that's all you need.

It just seems odd that you are two for two on this and if it's true and it affects the performance, I'd be selling and buying different Mosins. I own five in various models and they all shoot good thus far.

Hey Bpost - What size slug are you starting with?
Maybe it's not big enough and you're getting an inaccurate 'squeeze'. [smilie=1:

If your checking at the muzzle it maybe severe wear from the cleaning rod? or possibly the barrel has been slightly smashed sometime in history.

By golly, you may have something there! It was the tip cut from a 41 cal half jacket. I may need to get a larger ball and check this out again!

like ru shooter said you may have clean'n rod wear if your check'n from the muzzle. might check from the chamber, if it's ok you will need to recrown the barrel. lol.
