Just about got my long action Savage with a new 308 Win. barrel bedded, ect. and ready for some range work.
Thought I'ld ask to see what people are loading under the RCBS 200 Sil. and the 311299, both about 200 gn. [just got my NOE 311299]:grin:

Thanks
Wayne

my cast wt was 210 gr.....sized to .309....fired in a .308 Savage 99C (not exactly a target rifle)
I had good results at 100 yds with IMR 4895 at 28 to 30 grains.
By good results I mean I could hit the 3" dia. clays at 100 yds without any problem.

My 200-grainer is the Lee 309-200-1R over 26.0 gr H4198. Link is to a previous post with pics.

I don't have a .308 win anymore but I do keep loaded ammo around just in case my friend manages to get out to the range with us. He has a Rem 700 police sniper with fairly good glass. This is a plinker load I worked up and I couldn't help but laugh at how quiet it is and how well it groups...almost like a poor mans 300 whisper.

13Gr red dot
206 Gas checked lubed with Carnuba red
Winchester primer
LC brass

Not sure on what the velocity is but at 100 yards you could cover the group with a 2" spotter.....the point of impact was about 18" lower than his factory loads

30 grs. of Varget works in my .308, best load to date.

I'm with Wolfy, I use the standard 13,0 Red Dot with the RCBS 30-180FN (195+ grs) in my 308's. All seem to like it and my FR8 adores the load. FWIW it will completely penetrate an adult sheep carcass- length wise.

Thanks ALL, with this and the data I found in a 1950's Lyman Cast bullet manual.
Doc, I tried my 311299 out the other day, just wanted to see what was what, mine drop pou about 196.5-197.0 , I used the 10# Lee, sure dosen't take long to almost empty that pot.

+1 Varget in the .308. I'm shooting 31.0 with the 311299 in my M1a

Has anybody ever tried Lyman 311284 in the .308 case? I've got this mold and some boolits cast but not yet sized, but no longer have a 30-06. I see where one of those SPR18 single shots are still available in .308. For a long time I considered getting one of these in 30-06 for a cast boolit rifle but never did, and now the 30-06 version of that gun seems to have disappeared from the market.

JL,

I bought a 308284 from one of the members here. I am going to use it in a sporterized M1917, ( if I ever get it finished) and a 98 Mauser with a Parker-Hale barrel on it, Probably any other 30 cal I can come up with also. Mine wiegh 217 grains as cast, I think a .30-40 service load equivalent is very possible.

I have shot the 311284 in a 308 with good success but it has a long throat and I can seat it out far enough to keep the gas check at the bottom of the neck. Seating the GC below the neck generally reduces accuracy.
