never had any issues making lube in the past, but for some reason i tried to mix up a small batch of lube consisting of bees wax, crisco and a bit of vegetable oil. a couple drops of candle wax die for some color to make it pretty too. after it cooled i noticed it was almost brittle seeming, no elasticity to it at all. but at the same time if i squish it between my fingers it ends up feeling almost too soft.

never used crisco in a lube before, and haven't had this problem either.. is there a connection? other thing i was thinking as a possibility was maybe the process of how it was cooled? any thoughts or ideas? thanks..

i wasn't concerned about it being soft, but the fact that it seems brittle unless "squished"

none of my other lubes are like this, kinda hard to explain, but its as if this batch has two different contradicting consistancies.. maybe i could put it in a bowl and hit it with a blender to get the lumps out like mashed patatoes? haha..

I use crisco, beeswax , and STP and mine is always kind of brittle in tube form. After running it through the lubersizer it is real sticky though. Works good too.

I found that too, so I dropped the Crisco and switched to some other oils. Flows better and sticks on the bullet better also.

I use jojoba oil in my BP lube and leave out the Crisco.

I use bees wax, lard and veggie oil. I made a one gallon paint can full.

I think that can will will last longer than me.

I bought some STP to substitute for the veggie oil. But have not yet.

Ive loaded almost 300, and the can is still full.

What portions of each. I have a couple of gallons of extra lard I was thinking about using up to make lube. I'll store the bullets and lube in an empty refrigerator at a temperature of 40º. I have 20lbs of soy wax I'm going to use also. Will be shooting mostly black powder.

Pitmaster, You don't want to use a lube that contains STP for shooting BP. If you do you will find out why you should not.

What portions of each.

50% bees wax, 40% lard, 10% cornola oil.

No STP for BP.

Crisco changed there formula, however I can't remember when they did it. It's just one of those small pieces of information that stick in ones head for some reason.

I use bee'swax 50%, crisco 40%, & lanolin 10% it hasn't gotten brittle and seems to do well in my Sharps.

they changed the mix in crisco in the 90s they quit using cottonseed oil,and went to soy bean oil,
I like cottonseed better so I found some at sportsmans warehouse in the camping section,,, they use it for deep frying.. they have both peanut and cottonseed so read the label
soy oil seems to give up about 95-100 degrees..............Dean

I use 50% beeswax, 40% Crisco, 5% jojoba oil and 5% lanolin in my black powder 45-70 and 45-90 target rifles. Works great but I wipe every shot, I don't blow tube.
