Hi,
I have just started casting Lee 250gr 379 for my 94 bigbore. They are casting at 383 .Should I try them as cast ? I don,t have any sizing die yet. any thoughts ? Gerry.

You can load a dummy up and try it for fit which will give you an answer. If it will fully chamber then load 5 for testing.

As No1 says, if they will chamber easily they will most likely shoot fine. I would add though that you will most likely need to make a bigger expander ball for your belling die, 'cause if it is too small the bullets will get torn up trying to seat them. I have several guns that shoot exceptionally well with bullets way bigger than normal, once the dies have been modified to work with them.

Ken Waters, in his Pet Loads article in Handloader Magazine on the .375 Winchester (January-Feb, 1978), said the rifle had a .375" bore and 1-12" twist, same as the .375 H&H barrels by Winchester. He sized all his cast bullet loads to .376" for plain base and .377 for the gas checked 375449 Lyman. He didn't experiment with bigger diameter at that time. But, with my Browning 1885 in 38-55, that has a .376 bore, I use .380" and .381" bullets with exceptional accuracy. So, all you can do is try them, but .383" might be a little too big, I'd go down to the .380-1" range. Buy some commercial bullets of that size and try them before you buy a sizing die.

I size my 375449s to .379 for the .375 win. They shoot great at this size. I also use this same size for a 38/55 win. original (1897) a Browning 1885 and a Marlin 336 in 38/55 and the same load in all 4, all shoot great.

My BB94 has a bore diameter of .3752". I size my boolits (220gr LBT) to .376. This ahead of RE 7 has been my go to load for years.

I also size to .379 for the Win BB.

How about a comparison of the Lyman 375248 vs Lee 476137. Any really accurate loads for either? I don't need a real fast load, just an accurate shooter. Grooves in my Ruger #3 run .380 from slugging the barrel. Need .381 or so as cast ?????? Tried a few sized at .375 and .376 and they were crappy. Mold tosses them at about .379

Good morning
The Winchester 375 W Barrel I bought was right at .376 at the throat area. Shoots .378 Bullets nicely. .379 are no better. .381 sized cast (my 38.55 standard) will not chamber without a firm pull on the handle.
generally Winchesters in 375 are reasonably correct diameter.

Could you please confirm that the Ken Waters article you mentioned is in that issue. I'm trying to gather .375 Win. reloading information and I went to the Handloader Magazine website to look up that issue (N0. 71). The sample PDF's Table of Contents shows the Ken Waters Pet Loads article in that issue to be Pet Loads For The .41 Magnum. I'd very much like to find the article you mention, and will purchase that back issue. Thanks.

You guess? I take it you have not slugged the barrel yet? Just because some one else used a .xxx size doesn't mean your is the same. Yes there is a better chance being a modern production gun that it may be the same or close.
Take a chance and guess if you want, I myself want to know for sure what MY particular barrel is.
This forum on this chambwering and I can't beleive that someone else with way more knolwedge than I, never mentioned this. That is always the direction the eleders here pointed me in when I was getting started.
The lee mold is dropping .383? Has it been modified? The two I have fooled with dropped .377-.378.

ozymandias,

The article on the .375 Winchester by Ken Waters is in issue #77 of Handloader Magazine, on page 25. It's the January-February, 1979 issue.

Hope this helps.

Late to the party, but mine slugs at .376. Chambers the Lee at .379 fine, but haven't shot any.

I loaded same 250 grain lee as cast at .380-.381 in my 94 BB that slugged .3765 and while it shoots really nice groups so far the leading i get in front of the chamber is worrying me. The lead has cleaned out easily enough so far, but thinking about a lee sizer in .378 real soon.

Hi folks, I'm new to the .375, having just acquired a unfired Marlin 375. I have the Lee mold on order and I was curious as to what kind of velocities it can be driven at. I really only bought it for making target ammo as my hunting partner has the Saeco 250 gas checked mold and it's mine to use as I need it. I figured to use the Saeco as my hunting boolit.

Don't know the velocity, but 15 grains of 2400 in blown out .30-30 cases with the bullet crimped between the lube groove and crimp groove gives really nice groups.
