would the velocity generated by 14-20 grains of 2400 w/a 30 cal 170-180 grn lead bullet by considered low enough where a gas check would not be needed? wayne h.

30 caliber what? Big difference between a 30 cal cabine and a 30.06.

Wow...180 grainer in a .30 carbine. Neat! :kidding:

To answer the OP's qustion...I'd try it with no GC first and see. Especially on the lower end of the charge scale, I've had good success with plain based 150's in my '06

14-16 of 2400? Maybe, depends on boolit fit to throat and bore condition

Above that? I dought it.

Just use the GC, and be done with it.

I use 16gr 2400 with a 180 plain base in a 30-06 with no leading. Like calamity jake says- all depends on fit and bore condition.

I was loading a 30-06 with 15 Gr of 2400 under a Saeco 315 at 175 Gr with GCs with good accuracy. Tried leaving off the GC. What a mistake. 100 yd accuracy was a pattern not a group and 20 rounds left behind a lot of lead. You just have to try it. My load didn't work, some do. It was not all that hard to get the lead out, an hour of work with a bore brush.

A plain base MAY have worked better. Never know until you try it

One of my standard PB loads for the 30-06 is 12.0 of 2400 and a 140-170 g bullet.Velocity is 1200 fps generally.

I use a GC on all 30 cal boolits. I try and push them as fast as I can w/o leading.
So far so good

" It was not all that hard to get the lead out, an hour of work with a bore brush"

If you would have loaded your SAECO 315 with all grooves lubed and GC'd with 5g of Bulleye (or similar fast stuff) 2-5 shots would have cleaned the leading right out.Works great, picked the trick up from Colton Oregons Cast bullet guru Bob Mills.

damron,
That is a good trick.

Guys- a little 4/0 steel wool wrapped on an old bore brush and a little lube will clean your leading in a few strokes. An hour of scrubbing? Stop making it hard on yourself.

get a mop and a few strands of a copper chorboy, 2 passes and I've cleaned the WORST leaded barrels I've ever seen in 5 minutes.
