howdy y'all, i have a 98 mexican mauser 7mm stuck back in the safe i bought it a few years ago, well just dug it out and would like to shoot some cast in it. i slugged the bore and she's sayin' .286 grv. .276 bore. just would like some advice on what type of boolits to use, and what power to use. if it's acurate by my standards i'll hunt deer w/the old girl this year. i shot some factory 140gr. load win. j-bullets in it last year it shot ok if i member correctly it shot a 4''-5'' group @75yd. . but i'd like a better group than that .:cbpour:

My old Rolling Block loves 36 gr 4064 under the Hornady 175 RN jacketed bullet. I have
had good results with a LBT 120 gr in my Ruger 7x57 over 16 gr 2400. I think your issue
with boolits will be getting ine at least .001 over groove diam. Often .003 over groove is
best for accy with rifles, so you may need to go as large as .289 for a good shooting load.

The only way to know is try. Also, try 10 Unique as a boolit load - often shoots accurately
and is VERY mild.

16 gr of 2400 under the 130 lee and the 150 Lyman shoot very well in my 77 Ruger.
Might have to beagle your mold, but suggest you measure as cast, might be what you are looking for size wise. Agree with MTgun44 on size.

+2 on the size, also on starting with the Lee, cast, measure, and try shooting as cast. Then "BEAGLE", then Leeminate ??
You might want to see what the Paper Patchers suggest.

i don't have a mould yet, i thougt i'd ask you smart fellers first since some of y'all have been here before and know your stuff. i purchased some boolits from a guy on GB, he said they where #2 alloy dropped from a rcbs 168 gr. mould. they are to sized .285 gc and lubed so i afriad to use them cause there to small.that was before i slugged the bore oopps! so i guess i'll they the lee 130gr. mould and open it up a little to .288 -.289. i'm not wanting a tack driver just consistant 2'' - 3'' groups, i call that good nuf fer deer. :cbpour:

I have the lyman 135 gr mold and the Loverin 165 gr mold and they both do well in my 7mm rolling block , and M1895 mauser, and ruger #1,,,.....but my Mauser 1893 has got excessive bore and nothing works for that rifle.
I find IMR 4895 powder works very well for a reduced load (26 gr.)

My suggestion would be to try the ones you purchased,,,,keep the velocity low....1600 fps
run a box through your rifle and see if they print on the target and if they the barrel gets any leading....

11 graines of Unique works well also,,,,as does 17 grains of 2400

your Mauser might have very excessive free-bore so I would check to see how far out you have to seat the boolit or J bullet so they are just off the lands.......I know my M1893 has so much freebore that accuracy is next to impossible either with J's or with boolits

You might also start looking for any of the old "Ideal" molds. They were usually spec'ed out to cast about .288 or so for .287 barrels. Most newer molds are for the current .284 barrels. You might be able to paper-patch a .270 boolit. Check both ends of that barrel, lots of them have oversized muzzle ends from over-enthusiastic cleaning rod use.

hornet, that's a good ideal about older moulds, but i don't know where to look, and besides i thinks i'll get the lee 130gr. and just open her up to .287 or so. apperently whoever sportered the rifle set the barrel back, and recrowned the barrel cause it looks good they spent some time on the gun. the mans name is ingraved on the floor plate. the stock look to custom made, and a good job i mite add. it got a loopy 1pc. scope mnt. and a weaver k4 that's ok, but if i can make her shoot'n better she'll get a better scope, and trigger.:Fire: and if it get don't better she'll be gett'n a barrel maybe a douglas?

I use a lee 130 gr with 22 grains of 4198 in my 1908 brazilian 98 and it is accurate out to 200 yards, I set the elevation at 600 for the 200 yard range. I just started using the rcbs 150 grain silloute bullet and it seems to also work very well startong at 19 grains of 4198. Hope this helps.
