Im looking for a 14" 30-30 barrel for my Contender, that will be used exclusively for cast boolits. My question is about one that I've seen that the owner states has the early 6 groove bore. Are these any better/worse than the current barrels, with cast bullets? Thanks-

I don't think one be preferred over the other. All TC 30 cal. barrels are now 1-10 twist the earlier ones were 1-14. This would be more important if you wanted to shoot heavy boolits.

Thanks Mugs. I'm currently using the Lyman 311041 in my old Marlin, would that be too heavy/long of a bullet for the 1:14" twist in the Contender barrel?

This program seams closer to what will work with cast. See my post about rate of twist requirements..
The older Contender barrels with the soldered on front sight usually have the 1-14 twist, but the only way to be sure it to check it with a cleaning rod.
Be sure to slug the chamber throat for proper bullet sizing.
If you are unsure about the twist and your 31141[old version] ask to borrow the barrel, load up several with 9.5-10.0 Unique, this should give you about 1150 FPS, shoot on paper at 100 yds and see if you get round holes on key shaped holes

Wow, that is a very interesting site! According to that site, my 311041 will be plenty stable in a 1:14" twist barrel @ 1700 fps. Just for the heck of it, I plugged in a couple of my heavy AR bullets, and it seems accurate. Lots of helpful data, thanks!
