Does anyone haveHV RIFLE loads they could share for use with the lyman 401 mold, maybe mention lube and BNH if you dont mind. Anything upwards of 1500 fps would be good

There isn't a lot of info out there regarding the 38/40 it seems. I just traded into a rifle in that caliber and have been playing around with some loads using a 180gr cast boolit. The slug is a RNFP PB that I think is from a Magma mold. The boolits came with the rifle and the box is unmarked, so I don't know any more than the weight and size.
Anyway, on the Alliant site, www.alliantpowder.com ,they give a load for the 180gr Sierra J bullet using RL7 and 2400. The top load for RL7 is 25+ grs and over 1700 fps with that bullet. The pressures generated with 2400 and RL7 are low and help to keep leading down with the PB boolit. With 22.5 grs RL7 and a Fed 150 LP primer I'm getting around 1425fps, decent accuracy, and no leading. The same load with a CCI Mag LP primer, I get about 1530fps. Still no leading, but the group opened up some. These were at 75 yds.
About 20grs of IMR 4227 might also be a good starting load.

Good luck :castmine:

I've been diddlin around with 8 grs of 700x and gettin them over the chrony at 1600 with no signs of case stretch after 4 firings on same case. Maybe I'd do well to leave em there

From Phil Sharpe, Complete Guide to Handloading: 180 grain lead + 17 grains 2400 = 1340 @ 8300 pressure; 21 grains 2400 = 1715 @ 14,000 pressure. Changing to Unique 10.2 grains = 1555 @ 16,000 psi. Seating depth for all loads was .317". No, I don't know what boolit. Remember this is old data. Regards, Woody
