I have a 1894 Krag found an uncut barrel in good shape . Just checked it with a lead slug. Got .301 was the Krags that small when made? Looks like that would be tight for a Jacket Bullet. My other barrel [cut] checks small too at .305. Anyone know about them?
One other thing to add. It has a trap door for the cleaning stuff. It was very hard to open. Inside there is a hole drilled at about a 45 degree angle from the main center one. There is a small wood handle screw driver in it . What was it used for?

You are doing something wrong, either your slugging or your measuring. Early Krag barrels ran .3095 to about .312 in the grooves, while the later one were a true .308. .301 sounds about right for the lands, but not the grooves.

It is of course possible you barrel is packed full of powder and metal fouling. Make certain you clean the barrel down to bare steel before slugging.

The only 1894 Krag I know of is the Norwegian models. Unless your talking about the year it was manufactured then it might be a U.S. Krag. If that hole you mentioned was drilled like you say, it wasn't done at the Springfield armory....Geo

My '92 Krag is dated 1894, as I think most of them were. Virtually all of the '92s were recalled and updated to '96 configuration. The butt trap was not original, but part of the update. The originals had a cleaning rod under the barrel.

Yep .301 is fairly normal for the bore diameter, groove diameter can be anywhere from .307-.312.

The lands are .301 and groove was .309 the rifle was redone at some point barrel cut and 03 sight installed. stock was filled where the cleaning rod was. done very good can not tell easy. It was not cut off. but the front band was modified for the sight.Butt is the trap door type. and has been "home checkered" serial is 408 so it is a 92 blue is verygood for age on all parts. has the removable peep and looks to be parts are nickeled trigger guard and bolt.
I got a barrel and receiver on here to put the 30in barrel back to original but the receiver is bent so may have barrel changed to mine. receiver will be nice paper weight
As for screw driver hole It was done many years ago and only thing it will fit is the screw in the front sight.

Your rear sight is probably a 1901 sight, they're much like a 1903, (having a ladder that folds up). 1892s-1896s could be re-fitted with the 1901 sight, the 1898 models had a different sight installed at overhaul, the 1902 model.

Most of the Krag rifles actually used in the Spanish/American war were 1892s with only a "smattering" of 1896s issued. Values of 1892s up-dated to 1896 specs. run about the same as an 1896 without the 1901 up-dates. An 1896 with the up-dates of 1901 run around 15-20% less, though often make the best shooters due to being re-barreled and put away.

Re-barreled and put away seems to have been the case for a lot of 92s also. The 3 I've managed to scrounge up all have like new barrels. One was like new because the stock was cracked, as was the receiver. After taking that one apart I could see the bolt lug was only bearing on the outside edge of the locking recess and the cracks radiate from there. Serial # was 13xxx. Bad day for heat treating I guess, cooked the carbon out and she rings like a bell. 2 of mine are full length, and one has been cut back to 24in. Shotman, get us a pic of yours.
