I have another question for all the knowledgable folks here. I have two 45-70 rifles that I'd like to cast for. One is a newer Japchester 1886, the other is a mid 1980's Marlin 1895SS. What are your thoughts on one mold that will work for both rifles? Is there such a mold?
I'm looking at something weighing in the 350-400 grain area with a gas check. Any ideas are appreciated.

Wes, but the RCBS 45-405 and don't look back. It will drop bullets at about 420 grains checked and lubed and is my favorite 45-70 bullet.

In the active group buy section look at the following thread but go to post #129 to see what is being offered a choice of three different weights or all three in the same mold. The draw back is gas check only on the largest the plus is a hollow point option.

Talk to BaBore. He's got several old group buy molds on his site now regurlarly available. Including the 460420 that was quite popular. He will know what will fit the Marlin and function through it.

I bought a 462420 from BaBore with both PB and GC cavities. It is the best shooting 45-70boolit I have. I don't have a lever gun so I don't have to worry about feeding but they shoot great.

Both PB & GC have matching nose profiles and they were designed to feed in the Marlin 1895, 45-70. They have a 0.456 nose length and 0.325 meplat. I have several other designs that also fit the leverguns

Listen to Babore, he makes the best.
I want some of his molds and have tested a lot of his boolits that he was good enough to send me.
Finances don't allow it yet. I only have to pay taxes on a little over $6800 this year but still have to pay the feds and the state.
I need powder and primers too.
Is this a great country or what?
Buy your guns and molds before the "O" creep gets done with us.

+1 on RCBS 405 GC. Great boolit, very accurate.

If you own a .45/70, you need two moulds. One, the RCBS 45-405-FN and also a Lyman 457122. Can't go wrong on either one....or both./beagle

Beagle is correct. The 457122 design is time tested. It's been in Ideal/ Lymans catalogs for almost 120 years....Geo

Thanks again for all the advice. I'll try and get one this year some time.
