If you could only own 5 handguns what would they be?

My choices are:

S&W Mdl 41

Thompson Center Contender Super 14 in 30/30

Freedom Arms Mdl 83 454 Casull

Colt 1911 or similar style clone 45ACP

Ruger Old Army 7 1/2" w/Adj sights

My personal favorites would be a 1911 45 auto, 357 4" Ruger GP100, Uberti SA 45 Colt, Baby Desert eagle compact in 9mm and a S&W model 41 22RF.

I don't think so. I have 5 frames and 15 barrels from 6" - 21". You could pick out 5 barrels and that would count!

Ruger Mark II Government Target model.

Smith and Wesson 642 .38 Special

Smith and Wesson Model 14 .38 Special

Smith and Wesson 625 Mountain Gun 45 Colt

Ruger SBH Bisley Hunter .45 Colt Scoped w/2x Leupold

I have the first four, the last is a comprimise, assuming the reason I would have only 5 is being economics, so the .475 Linebaugh was eliminated, also the choices were made to streamline moulds, dies, brass to just two handloaded cartridges. It's painful to think of only having 5, I must be spoiled.
As long as I'm at it, Unique would do me fine in everything above, or 2400 as far as that goes.
The two moulds, 358429 with one cavity a hollow point, and a RCBS 270SAA.

Ruger 7-1/2" Blackhawk 45 LC

Smith Kit gun in 22 LR or Ruger 22 LR Auto, Smith M-19, Charter BD 44, Smith or Ruger in 44 mag or 45 Colt. That's 4, my 5th would be a 32 Long or Mag, preferably in a J Frame Smith with 4-5" barrel and adjustable sights. If I couldn't have one of those then a Smith 38 Bodyguard Airweight.

Ruger SBH Hunter .44 Mag

Colt 1911 .45 ACP

S&W M686 6"

Ruger Single-Six Hunter

Ruger MKII Target 6-7/8"

I can't imagine having only five handguns though.
For each one on the above list, I could list at least three alternates.

Y'know, rather than being brand- and model-specific, "the list", to my thinking, should be one of TYPES...what generic types should make up the battery of handguns??

With that in mind, for the AVERAGE shooter, meaning without the competition-specific guns:

-a good .22 revolver, since these are preferable for easier handling in the field compared to autoloaders. My choice would be something with the size of a 4" K-frame S&W, of which there are several on the market. (J-frame-size .22s are a breed I simply can't shoot worth a plugged nickel.)

-a 1911-type in .45ACP, a deathless classic without which a shooter is simply incomplete. Works for both fun and for "serious purposes".

-a .357 revolver, a fine choice for almost any handgunning except large-game hunting.

- a medium-length .44 Magnum, which covers every handgunning activity NOT covered by the list above.

So....why do I have so danged many other handguns???? Because I'm NOT average, I suppose.
Hmmm...quite a few revolvers in my list, n'est-ce pas? Rest assured that there are plenty of autos at the ol' homestead, too.

For use as tools:
1. Smith 629 for bear country.
2. Rooger Mk II Government model for trigger practice.

4. Glock for times when the situation seems dangerous (along the border).
5. Three braces of Cowboy Shooters for competition.

2. S&W 28 . 357
3. CZ75 9mm
4. S&W 14 38 special
5. M1911A1 NM .45 acp

I would like to have at least another 5, this fist list is just too short.

Damn you guys are old school! I think I only saw four people mention a gun with a double stack mag (two CZ75s and two Glocks).

Having said that, I currently only own a Smith and Wesson 1911 and a Ruger Super Redhawk in .454. I'd like to get a medium sized .357 revolver and a double stack 9mm.

I am with dubber123 and fivegunner on this... I tried and I can't come up with just five. I've been staring at this post for half an hour and keep coming up with a different top five every time I start to type them.

A GP100 in .357 Mag for my truck

44 magnum single action revolver (Ruger Super Blackhawk)

22 cal revolver (Ruger Single Six 5 1/2 inch barrel)

I don't like the fact that I have had to exlude the officers models of both 22 and 38, official police 38, anaconda 45, all three series of troopers, 1851, 1860 and 3rd dragoon, cobras, agents, police positive and diamondback etc. Hopefully in heaven, there is no restriction or I am not going!

Looking at this for the most versitle combination from what I have.
1) CZ-75 9mm with cadet conversion for use as a .22 (Mine is very accurate)
Can use it for defense and quick swap of the slide as a plinker/ low cost trainer.
2) Charter Arms Bulldog
.44 Special makes a for a decent payload of snake shot and .44SPC makes for a decent defense round.
3) Ruger Super Redhawk .44 mag 7 1/2" with 4x Leupold.
It will kill hogs and deer out to 75 yards with me behind the scope. I could hit the vitals at 100 but never had anything beyond 75 at he was the odd man out.
4) Ruger GP-100 6" full lug .357Mag
Cause my dad gave it to me plus it is robust and accurate. From experience, it will kill deer and hogs with proper bullet selection and shot placement.
5) Springfield 1911A1 .45ACP
Cause it was the first handgun that I bought myself and I got my dad the next serial number. Plus it would fufill a defense roll well.

Giving up my S&Ws and Glocks would make me cry though.

Ruger Mk II
-cheap to shoot, good for small game, and even a little larger game if shot placement is precise. Good for teaching others to shoot.

S&W 629 Mountain Gun .44Mag
-accurate enough to hunt with out to maybe 100 yards for me, capable of taking any animal I am ever remotely likely to hunt or face.

A well built 1911, put together to my specs.
-nothing fits my hand better, its a nightstand gun, a carry gun, a competition gun, accurate as can be, easy to work on, and a reasonably capable round for deer sized game.

.38/.357 airweight snubnose
-livable 25 yard accuracy, and its so easy to carry there is no excuse for leaving it home

The above 4 I have...the next I don't

Something like a S&W M&P in 9mm or .40S&W
-capable enough rounds for light hunting and defense. Easy to shoot and reliable. Best of all the gun can be handed off to a less experienced shooter if need be and with little training they can proficient. Also cheap and ugly enough that I won't care too much what might happen to it.

Thanks for the kind words. I am a confessing gun nut. Best part is, my youngest son is coming right after me and the oldest got a C&R license and is also an avid shooter.

There are also many other nice firearms mentioned here by other members, the Freedom Arms revolvers among the very desireable.

This is a valuable exercise, I just realized. I will make top 10 lists for handguns and rifles, and then see which ones I still need to get.

Ruger SP-101 4", SS, adj sights .22 LR
Ruger GP-100 4", SS, adj sights .357 Mag.
Ruger BH, SS .44 Special
Ruger SS Bisley .45 Colt
Fusion 1911 Bobtail Commander

It appears I like stainless steel Rugers, but other than that you can see I am very unprejudiced. :drinks:

Good to see this list come back... I will assume that ammo and/or reloading components are not a problem, and here goes...

1) I have to have a good 22. This would be limited in my case to either a K-22 revolver or a target sighted semi-auto like one of my High Standards... probably my custom-upgraded Sport King Military. For the sake of argument, you could do just as well with Browning, S&W or Ruger for the the semi-auto, but this is my list.

2) A top quality center fire DA revolver... in my case, a Model 66 or 19, but since I shoot so little 357, I'd feel OK with my 67 or my old K-38. People with large hands might like to go with a larger frame like a Model 27 or 28, and I would be alright with that. I would certainly accept substitution of a Ruger or Colt in somebody else's armory here.

3) A good 1911-based 45 comes next. I have a custom-built Gold Cup that would be my choice, and I could cheat a little here by adding the Ace conversion, since that's what left the factory on this frame, and if I got away with that, I'd probably add a 9 mm conversion as well since it might be desirable to have shooting that ammo as an option. If I get to go this way, I could drop the semi-auto 22 above and keep the K-22.

4) A concealed carry piece comes next. Since I want it to be as dependable as it is concealable, it should be a revolver, and in my arsenal it would be a S&W Chief Special in blue (Model 36) or preferably stainless (Model 60.) Currently, I carry a little pre-J-frame 32 Hand Ejector snub, but I've got a Baby Chief that I would use instead if I were paring things down.

5) My previous choices were so broadly useful, that for my final choice, I would have to look at what I would be doing for the foreseeable future. If I wanted to plan on Serious Hunting, I would need either a big center fire in a Contender or a 6" Model 29 S&W (44 Mag & Special.) If more urban situations were on tap, a larger carry piece like a Colt Commander tricked out for street use. In a distant (6th) place would be a high capacity semi-auto like my Para-Ord double stack 45 or one of the high-capacity "Wonder Nines." Honorable mention goes to a large caliber single action like a Ruger Blackhawk in 44 Mag or 45 Colt.

I wrote an article 20 years ago that I never submitted taking the same challenge with just 3 guns (I chose the High Standard, the Gold Cup and the Model 66 w/ 4" bbl if you're curious) so having 5 guns to choose from made it easier but a little more challenging to reevaluate what covered my perceived needs and wants. Back to just 3? I'd stick by my old choices! ;)

Fun Challenge!

I feel like an odd duck saying this, but I own four single actions and if I could have any five (four), it would be the ones I currently have.....22 Single Six, .357 BH, .44 Special BH, and .45 Colt BH Convertible. I tried 1911's, poly frames, double actions, but it was the SA's that really lit my fire. Possibly I'd add an SP101 for a more concealable weapon, and that would make five....actually I'd rather have a little Sheriff's Birdshead .45. And being all Rugers they'll easily last long enough to pass on to my kids.

Now with all of this political nonsense going on, I'm even happier with my SA's. They'll be the very last to go....if our worst nightmares actually happen.

Ruger Blackhawk 4 5/8 45 colt/45 acp
Ruger Vaquero Montado Birdshead 45 acp

I gave my son my single six- I need to buy another.
I would like to get, eventually a 1917 45 acp and a 1909 in 45 colt. Fear of a Ruger load finding its way into the 1909 may force me into a Redhawk in 45 colt. I'd survive without the 1911's, but the Rugers are a part of me. A nice .454 in a slick single action would be nice, but I have not researched enough to know what I would want.

It's interesting that many of the guns mentioned are vintage, and are no longer in current production. Maybe the sexy high capacity military style pistol's charm is only skin deep, while the classic's charm lasts forever.

4. 1911
5. Ruger mark 1,2 or 3 .22lr

These hypothetical - if you had to "pick only ____?" questions always provide interesting views.
The thinking shows the large number of variables that go into the decision. The question doesn't place limits on the circumstances, such as: Are spare parts available? Is ammunition available? Would I be allowed to replace a gun?
Got Lead? mentioned that the lists are heavy on classic designs and I think that is proof that the market is a good filter for what qualifies as a "classic".

So here's my list:
1. Ruger Mark II, stainless
2. Ruger GP-100, stainless 3"
3. Sig P210
4. Some S&W J-frame with an internal hammer (442, 640, etc.)
5. Glock 19

If the question was changed to only 5 guns instead of 5 HANDGUNS; my list would include only two handguns.

In a quick un-official glance of the responses I noticed several guns that seem to appear on multiple lists: A good quality .22 rimfire, a 1911, a mid-bore double action revolver(38/357), a big bore revolver(44+), a concealable handgun, a 9mm pistol and a hunting type handgun. I wonder what the actual breakdown by type is?

Looked through all 7 pages, and it appears ruger has won hands down.
1 A ruger single six 22, unless I talked bullshop out of that ccm. lol
2 A sbh 44 mag 7 1/2
3 a bfr 45/70 10 in.
4 a bh 357 4 in up to 7 1/2
5 a hammerless 357 to carry, haven't made up my mind yet.
If it ever come down to it the 44 would be the very last to go. lol

I,ve been thinking about this for a month now. I told nephew last night I just don,t know what to buy. The safe is full there are doubles in the same caliber. Heck I let him take a couple guns home with him. So the next gun will be a impulse buy it,ll just catcth my eye and come home with me.
