I made this disc punch out of scrap I had around the workshop, wanted to see if it was easy to make one,I used a chunk of steel 3/4 x 1 1/4 x 2 1/2". it is for .357 . I drilled a 7/16 hole in one end then cut a slit for the alu. or copp. strip. used the cutoff end of a scrap drill bit for the punch.I tried it on a arbor press, but it don't work with the arbor press, I think the punch to hole fit is too sloppey, it works good if I wack the punch with a plastic mallet.

Good work; looks pretty simple to me. Simple is good. Did you just hacksaw the slot, or ??? I guess a cutoff disc on the 4-1/2" angle grinder would work well.

Have you tried shaping a step in the end of the punch so it draws the material into a cup shape before cutting it?

I used a porta-band to cut the slot,a hacksaw would work, but really slow. a step on the punch would not work.hey fat-beeman,you just gave me on idea on how to make check former on the other end,I will have to do it on my mill, but it will work I think.I will have to get 7/16 endmill, mabey not,I think I can use a endmill I already have.keep you posted.thanks.

I originally made a punch/ block very similar to your's but got tired of the hammer part, so I made one to fit my press. 7/8x14 all thread with hole and slot and made a punch to fit where the shell holder goes. I cut a concave end on the punch with a sharp edge and it cuts very well.http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu350/Buck48_photos/DSCN0758.jpg I also made my own check makers.http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu350/Buck48_photos/DSCN0761.jpg<http://i662.photobucket.com/albums/uu350/Buck48_photos/DSCN0764.jpg

I like that punch,a lot easier to use than a hammer one,the check former is simple and a mimum of parts.good job.

Now go and get yourself a shaft collar. Below the shaft collar put a piece of rubber tubing that wraps around your punch. With that, the punch will pull itself back out of the material. All you'll have to do is advance the material and hit again.
