Only the Russians can answer that question! LOL

I bought several in the 1980's and the one I have now was purchased in 1986 IIRC.

By chance, yesterday I was looking at a Baikal being sold as a Remington O/U and it's nothing more than an IJ-27E with different cosmetics. I also noted that the barrels have not been draw-filed as mine was. Looking down the side of the barrels showed waves. You won't see those waves on mine.

I imagine that most, if not all, Baikals made today feature choke tubes. That was not the case in the 1980's. I bought several Baikals from the English importer whose warehouses were in Colchester; both O/U & SxS. I always preferred 1/4 & 1/2 chokes (IC & Mod) and the guns arrived with full and 3/4 chokes. To give other choke combinations, they sawed off so much of the muzzle and then re-installed the sight bead. It was simple and effective.

The one I have remaining was bought from a gunshop and when I asked for the chokes to be modified they cringed. They explained that they'd do it but didn't like to because the hard chrome lining in the guns dulled their reamers quickly. I knew I was getting a good one because these fellows personally selected their Baikal shotguns from the importer's stock.

A^K, thanks for the links in the other thread. Those are very interesting videos. Those rabbits look more like hares to me. Our "bunnies" aren't that large.

The most obvious difference is the size. Hares are much larger than rabbits. Technically, rabbits are born with closed eyes while the offspring of hares are born eyes open.

The American Jack Rabbits in the Western states are really a hare and they share their range with rabbits. In the Eastern states - East of the Mississippi River - there are only rabbits to the best of my knowledge.

Both make great chili. :)

My first shotgun was a Baikal IJ 27E. I bought it in 1973 when i turned sixteen. Lovely gun, but then again there's always something special 'bout the first one...

The Baikals made their appearance in Denmark in the late sixties. The first models were non-ejector, bored 1/2 & full. Later models were adjusted for the danish marked and had 1/4 & 1/2 choke. (the barrels were hard-chromed, and not easy to ream out)

I don't know the exact year the IJ 27E was introduced, but my guess would be around 1970.

One feature of the IJ-27E shotguns that I think is very worthwhile is the choice of ejection or simply extraction of the fired cases. My first IJ-27E was a skeet & trap two barrel set: 26" skeet barrels and 29 1/2 inch trap barrels. I shot many thousands of shells through the skeet barrels and I would set the action to extract when on the skeet range. When in the field shooting wood pigeons, I'd set it to eject.

I showed that feature to the shop worker Wednesday when I was looking at one they had in the rack. No one there knew about it.

Thought you guy might like to see a pre-Remington Baikal. Here's an IZH 27s (Sporting) 20 ga I recently upgraded and refinished... I have a standard IZH 27 in 12 ga and two Remington (Baikal) 210 SXS's in 12 and 410 ga. They were the best "buy for the buck" shotguns IMHO....

Remington recently discontinued marketing and distribution of the Baikal line. To my knowledge no new company has taken over US distribution...
