What mold could pull double duty for a .22 Hornet and .222 Remington. Am interested in one mold here that someone could recommend. OR..is it going to require the purchase of 2 molds ?

What twist rate is the Hornet? It's hard to beat the Lyman 225438 in a 16" twist Hornet and it'll do fairly well in a .222 Rem.

From the reading I've done on these forums (from other people's experiences), it seems like anything 55 grains or lower should stabilize fine in that hornet and the .222 also (of course).

Hello. I believe my TC 14" Barrel is 1:12 twist, Have no idea what the Sako .222 Rem. is. would like to be able just to use 1 mold to start using cast for both of them if possible.

For the hornet, a lighter boolit will do best. I'd suggest that you check out BRP (one of the vendor sponsors on this site) as there is a 47 grain 22 caliber mold available. I have a plain base and a gas check version and am very happy with them. The gas check version will definitely work in both cartridges and the plain base version is a great boolit to load in the Hornet at reduced velocities. I can load them to 22 LR speeds with a fairly soft alloy cheaper than I can buy 22 rimfire ammo.

Ok. will this mold work for both guns ? That would be great if it does. I'll check it out.

As has been pointed out, depends on the twist. You might be able to get along with one Lyman #225415. I have a M77 Ruger Hornet and also a M700 .222 Rem and that design shoots well in both rifles./beagle

+1 on that. My old CZ Hornet shot well with my 415 as does my .223 Rem. That said my 415 is the old version of 48gr. Much better game stopper than the RN.

I've found that the Bator is a pretty friendly cast .22 to work with. Unfortunately, Bator molds are a special order item & if you want one, you had better be prepared to wait many months.

Once again thanks for all the advice. Been thinking of Casting for both of them the last 3 months. Just didn't know what direction to go. I'll have my eyes open here for a chance at a mold and on the other forums as well. This one by far is the best for learning and info. I just want to make one good choice and one good investment before committing into one mold. Thanks.

Yes the BRP 22-47GC mold will work well in both cartridges. Look in the Vendor Section and he has the mold in his catalog. A very nice mold.

Your 12" twist Super 14 should stabilize the current 55 grain 225415. You might think about hefty doses of AA1680 to get the velocity up. The 225415 will also do very nicely in the .222 and that nice meplat makes it quite effective.

I'd get on the list for a 22 BATOR mold at Midsouth. It's a super performer in my Ruger 77/22 Hornet.
