For hunting? Wondering how it expands/flattens/tumbles/etc.

WHAT are you shooting it in? How FAST do you plan to shoot it? I've used a pure lead ball in a Squirrel rifle of .32 caliber with fine results. I've also shot near pure PAPER PATCHED bullets in several guns at near 1900 fps. You CAN shoot a pure lead gas checked bullet with out leading to bad but speed is going to be slower than a wheel weight alloy.

I have used that bullet in the Krag loaded at 1600 with wheel weight and lead for coyotes and small game. I havent recovered any bullets yet , but it left a nice hole on the far side. I use all my pure lead for M/L and hate to waste it but I might have to try this just to see how it works.

Thinking on a 762x39 bolt action. I'm looking for 30-30 soft lead round nose type pancaking like this. http://www.hunt101.com/data/500/30-30top.jpg

Planning on light skinned whitetail does and small south Texas wild pig. I really don't care if its all that messy on exit wound as it would just be for the meat.

3Parts pure lead, 1 part ww........waterdrop them and anneal the nose by standing them in shallow pan of water and passing a torch across their nose until you see a slight color change. In the 30/30 rusky short rimless top end velocity you will get the results you seek. the accuracy will still be maintained by the tougher yet still mallable drive area (under water..no anneal). WD 50/50 ww/pure will work also......... if you stay right at upper end velocity.

You end up with a weak version of a partition......should serve you well on them poor little deers.[smilie=l:

Really? I thought a gas checked pure WW would be the best. Accuracy suffers?

Hey...what is the aproximate bhn of the 3 pure/ 1 WW water dropped before anneling? Sounds like a great method.

I've used the 311291 bullet that is close to the Lee weight to take several deer.I USUALLY shoot a 15/16BHN alloy for hunting.I have used a softer alloy with great success though. I did slow the bullets down to about 1600FPS instead of my normal 2000fps. I prefer a flatnose design like the 311041 (170grain). Range has a lot to do with MY choices and also caliber. MY favorite is the .308 then the 30-06 in .30 cal. 7TC/U is 3rd.

About 14-16 after 1 week in a warm atmosphere. I normally run a bit more speed and therefore use the WD50/50 ww/pure and it tests 20-21 after 1 week. Both alloys will turn inside out before they fracture, but yet tough enough to do the job at hand. Tough and mallable= win/win and you ain't gotta fumble with a HP pin.

Sheepdog,
These are lee 150 gr. flat point shot at 2000 fps, from a 30/30. They are air cooled WW's, and they will expand as slow as 1400 fps. They were shot into wet newspaper.

Greg ,they look like the ones I shot into a quartering to me deer. The slug went from front of the shoulder to the opposite ham and stopped in the pelvic bone. Weighed 170 as loaded and about 155 recovered. Deer went less than 50 yards. I was sitting on the ground about 50 yards from him when I shot!
