Team.

Thought I would update on the Carcano. First, here it is. Model 91/41 chopped but chopped rather tastefully:

Note the inlays of wood.

I have been shooting the Lee Cruise Missile bullet:

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/JeffinNZ/Shooting%20stuff/IMG_0021-1.jpg

Load is 25gr AR2209 (H4350) with 8gr BPI original shotgun buffer, CM in 21 BHN alloy sized 0.269 with a aluminum Freechex 0.0118 gas check, CCI primer, OAL 2.965 and crimped. Velocity is 1750fps.

Still getting some yaw but these are 100m/110y groups from today.

http://img.photobucket.com/albums/v505/JeffinNZ/Shooting%20stuff/IMG_0020-2.jpg

I had to solder a brass nail to the top of the front sight blade to alter the sighting. My load shot low on the 300m setting and high on the 400m setting and there is nothing in between. After soldering a brass tack to the sight I sqaured it up and went to the range then slowly filed it down until the POI was where I wanted it. The above target is two three shot groups as I "walked" the POI up the target. A bit murky sorry.

Anyways, the load is grouping well yaw not withstanding and certainly minute of wallaby.

.303Guy is making me a paper patch bullet mould to try to see if I can get more bullet engaging in the throat to help chop the yaw.

Intersting Jeff, today I tried 27 and 28 gns of IMR 4350 in the 6.5x55 Swede. I cut my group by 2/3 nothing noteworthy, but less yaw. Still shooting 50 yds, If the group gets better tomorow, with 29 and 30 gns under the cruise missle, I will start working at 100. Tried to recover fired rounds to have a look see but my dozer pile makes things disaper in the roots and limbs with the dirt.

22 inches from memory. Very handy rifle. An mild to shoot. Maybe my girls will acquire it long term.

Jeff,
That is what my holes from my cavalry carbine look like. It appears you are getting about 1.5MOA, not bad by any means but the yaw is sure perplexing. My groups are running just over 2MOA but your sights are much better than my fixed sights. I am shooting 6 round groups since that is what it holds.
What twist is your barrel. Mine is gain twist, supposedly ending about 1-9.
I've had some more loads made up for more than a month but the weather hasn't cooperated very well.

Boz: my rifle has the statis 1 in 8.25 (from memory) twist. Yours will start 1 in 19.25 and be the same as mine at the muzzle.

I consider the yaw a greater source of knock down power. :-)

That long SOB turning sideways would sure do that. That is how the M-16 got it's reputation during Viet Nam as a real knock down round. The bullet was marginally stabilized and tumbled as soon as it hit anything.

OK team. To satisfy my curiosity (and Boz330's also) I shot, from a cold barrel, a full 6 round charger today at 100m/110y. Wouldn't you just know it that a nanosecond prior to sending the 4th round on its way the sun went behind a cloud so that shot went high on the target. Never mind. The other 5 are respectable enough. The 5 shot group is 1.8 inches or 46mm.

Love that yaw. HAHA.

I think that it is just your YOUNGER eyes and better sights. That's my story and I'm stickin to it.
What does the AR 2205 equate to? Do you have the ability to try that load at 200yds? It would be interesting to see what happens with yaw at a longer distance. Maybe that boolit will go to sleep farther down range. Just thinking out loud so to speak.
We are supposed to get some decent weather this week end and I don't have any work scheduled in so I might get to try some loads. After I get a few fields burned off if the wind cooperates. Seems like forever since I pulled the trigger on anything.

BOZ: Misprint on my part. Should be AR2209 which is H4350 out of ADI.

My eyes are relatively young but let's see how my shooting over open sights is in 10 years ah? HAHA. In fairness the Carcano sights are not too bad. Certainly better than K98 but not quite as good as SMLE.

I am taking the rifle hunting next month and will find a soft, dirt bank to shoot at and hopefully recover some bullets. Will also try a 200m group.

Mine has the fixed sights but POA and POI is pretty close at a 100yd.
Certain sights are easier than others and my SMLE has the PH5A on it so it is very nice.:drinks: Shallow Vs and inverted V fronts are especially bad for me although some of them seem better than others although it could just be the distance from the eye. Rear aperture is the best by far.
By next month things should be good for shooting almost every night. Daylight savings time comes in on the 14th so sunset will be an hour later.

Privi Partizan sells brass through Grafs. Doesn't Norma also make brass and loaded ammo for the Carcano, with that dastardly too-small .264" bullet?

Jeff...have you tried IMR 4350, as opposed to the H?

Bary; no, IMR powder is not that easy to get in NZ. Pretty happy with the ADI's actually.
