Custom Garand Rebarrel

Hello,

Why is it that you can get a barrel for an AR10 or AR15 in damn near anything that fits but you cant get it for a Garand?

I would love a Garand in 9.3x62. I didn't think it would be all that hard to find someone to make the barrel. Wrong

So whats the deal?
You can make the gas system adjustable. There are guys out there that will sell you one in 338 or 458 Mag. But that is not what I want.

Well you have a couple of issues - first would be port pressure curve - second would be timing the barrel so the port aligns in the right spot. on AR's that issue is already taken care of with the barrel extention and most of the AR's are either very similar calibers 308 ala 260 ala 243 - all on same basic case and gas self limiting or you buy an adjustable gas tube or you pick a different port position - rilfe, mid, carbine, pistol to match the load you use say for 300 whisper.

Garand barrels are machined more than most of the bolt action barrels. AR barrels have some similar machining, but the AR platform is current - the sun has set on the Garand.

With an adjustable gas plug you shouldn't have a problem getting a 35 Whelan to run, the problem, as you've discovered is getting someone to make a Garand barrel with anything other than a 308 bore.

Of course given enough money anything is possible. I wonder how far out a GI Garand barrel could be rebored to?

I dont think you could rebore a Garand to 35 cal and be safe. 338 is about max. would need the adjustable plug too

Normally I don't resurrect threads but this one caught my eye. Yes you can get a 35 Whelen barrel for a Garand. Lothar-Walther also makes a 9.6x62mm barrel for the Garand as well.

They also do 8mm Mauser / 270 Win / 7x64
