This is a two cavity mould that was given to me and I cast a bunch of boolits with it
for the first time yesterday using w/w & some tin. I was surprised when I weighed them
and they were coming in @ 255gr instead of the 245gr. The mould is an older mould so
I was wondering if these moulds were made different 'way back then'. I looked at the
current mould on the midwayusa site and it looks slightly different. The lube groove is
rounded and the one on the midway site looks like it is wide and square. TIA

ETA: These were a bear to lube with the Star. Besides gobbling up lube I needed to run
a lubed boolit through the Star every three to four new ones. My arm and shoulder complained
this morning!

Fugo - Do you have an old Ideal mold, or is it a Lyman/Ideal. The older ones are Ideal, before Lyman bought it. There have been some changes in that mold over the years, mostly quite minor, like lube gruv shape and front driving band width. I don't think the approx 10 grains difference would be a big deal. Just my take. enjoy Mike

There is nothing wrong with your mold. My 2 cavity Lyman 429421 drop boolits at around 250. It all depends on what the percentages of lead, tin and antimony are in your casting pot.

Fugo - Plus 1 on what SK said. Also, don't wait more than a day or so if you can help it, before you size the boo's. Mike

Thanks for the replys folks. I try to lube right away with my water dropped boolits and I
figured these things were going to be tough with all that surface so I lubed them last
night, not more than six hours after I cast them. I can't imagine what they would have
been like if I had waited!

The mould is a Lyman mould, not a Lyman/Ideal. There are some other numbers stamped
in the mould blocks. On one block it has K5 and a 826 number stamped in it and on the
other side it has the number 82 stamped in it.

This is quite a boolit. It will be interesting to see how it shoots out of my SBHH.

I have that mold in a 4 cav that I bought in 1970, ww+2% tin weighs about 253 grs.

That's less than a 4-1/2 percent difference in weight. Nothing to worry about.

What size are your boolits dropping, and what size is your sizing die? Making a major change in the boolit diameter will require extra sizer handle force.

Stew

What alloy? I use the same bullet in a 4cav. Weights form ww go about 250gr, 255gr form 50/50 lead/ww.

Alloy: W/W (9.5 BNH) & Approx 1.5% Tin (then water dropped)
Drop size: .432 - .433 Approx
Sizing die: .430

BINGO! :D

Thanks to all,
