looking to load for a 45/70 405gr bullet.

this rifle has ballard rifling and 24" in length.

i have heard that reloader #7 is a good powder for this rifle.

i want to go low and slow with a big punch!

Every manual I have has trapdoor or marlin loads for a 400gr bullet, pick one. Re7 is good for max loads for most mid bore stuff if I remember right. Try something else that is for light loads.

There are lots of good powders for the 45/70. RL7 is good for mid to upper levels in the marlin, Better for lower velocity is 4759, 5744, 3031, 4895, and a few others. And, for the lower level loads, even the shotgun/pistol powders such as unique, herco, etc. have utility. Actually, there are very few powders that don't work well in the old 45/70:cbpour:

My favorite midrange load for the 45/70 is 28.0gr. 2400 behind a 405gr. RCBS boolit. It shoots aroung 1 1/4" @ 100yds out of my 1895S. I also use it for hunting in my Guide gun and have never recovered a boolit from all of the hogs I've shot.

This is my 1895 CB with the Lyman 457193, cast with Lyman #2 and sized .459 with DGL lube. I use 27.0 gr of 5744 with a CCI BR2 primer and a COL of 2.53. This was obviously shot from a rest, with a Parts Unknown vernier sight.

(FWIW the .22 was shot with a Shiloh Montana Roughrider with a Crossno insert.)

I like 2400 for mid range loads in my 1895. Somewhere in the 24 to 28 gr range with a 405 works for me. I get about 1300 to 1400 fps with this. I find it to be relatively accurate and very easy on the shoulder.
I'm starting to like benchmark for higher end loads.
45-70 seems easy to loads with a HUGE variety of powders. Try a few and soon you too will have a "favorite".

I found with Varget (405gr CB) it left alot of un-burnt powder in the barrel.
IMR 3031 however, is my next purchase...but I still have 1/2 lb of Win. 748 that I'd like to work with.
WACO, how many grains did you use fro both Varget & 3031?
Cheers

13.5 - 13.6 grains of Unique 405 grain cast lead -> 1150 fps .

I used to own a
arlin .45-70 with micro groove rifling. My favorite load was 23 grains of 2400 with a 405 grain JSP.

I tried Elmer Keith's load of 51 grains of 3031 and the 405 JSP and it kicked like a MULE. Down range performance was impressive on all game like deer and black bear and effective on elk hands down.[smilie=w:

I do not recommend this load if you are recoil shy, and if you do decide to try it, start low and work your way up. Every gun is different, your best accuracy may be a charge lower than Elmer's reccomendation.
