Loaded and fired my first cast loads from my .303 Enfield this weekend. I used 13 grains of Red Dot with a gas checked 314299 (water dropped WW.) Chronographed at 1500 fps. Temperature was in the mid 30's. Very mild recoil and no signs of excess pressure.
Has anyone tried more than 13 grains of Red Dot? How was the accuracy?

Going higher my biggest problem was that the rifling stripped the bullet due to the very fast acceleration of a Red Dot load.

Lyman's Cast bullet handbook suggests that pressure on these is already in the mid 30,000 PSI range (IIRC) so you wouldn't want to go MUCH higher anyhow.

I didn't think there would be much to gain by trying to get a few more fps with that particular powder. I had to use my 600 sight setting at just under 100 yards and was still hitting low.

Try 10 gr of Unique or 16 gr of 2400.

I have fantastic success with 19gr H4227.

Interesting Jeff, I have been doing pretty well with 19 grs. of IMR4227!

I have been loading a lapped 314299 sometimes gas checked and sometimes with filler over 19 to 20 grs. pf IMR227 with very good results in my .303.

I am looking forward to getting the NOE 316299!

That's because IMR and H4227 are the same powder now. AR2205 ex ADI. Check out the MSDS on Hodgdon.

A pound of 2400 is on my to buy list. I'm not interested in any loads that require a filler.

In the 45th edition of Lymans reloading manual they list an accuracy load of imr 4227 23.0 grains behind a 205 grain 311-299 with gas check. Hope this helps or pm me and I can look a differnt load. This one is accurate in my no 5 carbine. jim
