My gunsmith fitted an unfired 03-A3, 2 groove barrel to my Turkish Mauser, Today was my 1st opportunity to fire the rifle.

I used the same opportunity while I was at the range to test Pat Marlin's g/c tool with some of my dead soft .014 thickness aluminum and Swede Nelson's NOE 311284.

I'm very pleased with all 3 ! !

That's good shooting Ben. Is that with a scope? If it's not, you have keen eyesight:drinks:...Ray

Rifle has a nice Millet 3 X 9 X 40 , Illum reticle.
Reticle etched on the glass.......I really like the scope, bright, super clear optics. Rifle has a Bold Premium ( side safety ) trigger set to 1lb. clean, crisp .

The rifle has a detachable box mag. :

The 2 groove barrel is one of my favorites for .30 cal. cast bullets.

Ben could find out if your gunsmith can rebarrel my 7mm mauser with 308 or my o3a3?
was it very expensive?

Well that's a sweet rifle. For some reason I just pictured an old beater Turk with a new barrel. Don't really know why...Ray

Ben you said the group was shot with dead soft lead.
Do you mean strait lead at about 5or 6 BHN. If so does the gas check compensate that much for the soft lead???

Ben
I told you those alum. ck's would shoot. Great group.

Read it one more time........

" I used the same opportunity while I was at the range to test Pat Marlin's g/c tool with some of my dead soft .014 thickness aluminum and Swede Nelson's NOE 311284. "

It is the aluminum that I made the g/c's out of that is dead soft, not my bullet alloy.

You mentioned the aluminum was dead soft. What type of sheet stock did you use? Amerimax?

Ben

Yes.....Amerimax AL .014 "

did u have to anneal?

Ben
02-28-2011, 10:06 PM
No annealing .....use it as you've purchased it.

Mine is very soft and cuts easier than .014 copper.

I have three 50 foot long rolls of it.

Very impressive results, thanks for the info, love your rifle, very nice.
I'm still waiting for my 30cal gas checkmaker and 45 cal and a .284 male die from Pat,hope the wait is worth it,it's killing me seeing all these fantastic results and I can't do it yet, bugger :)

Ben's a Cast Boolit master.

Don't worry no34570, the dies are coming. Once I have all the calibers programmed and running there won't be any more wait times, and I'm running 45 housings and parts now.

I think you will be totally happy with your wait. Infact I guarantee it. Even if you have a special fit issue with one of your molds for any reason, my optional $9.95 custom male die will fix it.

You are in good hands.

Pat do your gas checks crimp on like Hornadys?

PatMarlin
03-06-2011, 04:56 PM
Checkmaker™ shank checks crimp on rock solid. Many shooters including Ben here and others at CB (and myself) have surpassed the performance of Hornady gas checks with their own checks.

That's just one of the benefits to my 2-step dies. You have flexibility and adjustment choices and not locked into a slot machine- one pull size gas check. To each his own- your mileage may very, but I guarantee to make the dies work for you, or your money back.

Flip through this thread to see how well they have hung on for cast shooters:

I love my "slot machine", it pays off double, every time I pull the lever and every time I pull the trigger. My slot machine makes checks that rival factory made and I can fabricate 1,000 checks in under 1 hour, I like those kinds of odds! ;-)

what is a slot machine?

ReloaderFred
03-12-2011, 12:31 PM
It's a machine in a casino that is decorated with lots of lights, bells and whistles. It gives you the illusion that you're going to become rich if you drop all your money into it, but in fact drains your wallet and then tries to convince you that you were having fun while dropping your house payment into it............

Hope this helps.

Do you use Pat Marlins tool?

ReloaderFred
03-12-2011, 02:30 PM
I have Pat's .35 caliber Checkmaker die and it works great. I make checks from .010" copper and I've made some from .009" aluminum, but prefer the copper. They work just fine.

I've got the .35 and .44 Plain Base Checkmakers on order from Pat now.

Hope this helps.

I really don't want to get into threads on who's better- his or mine. Those who use Freexhex have posted good reports, and they haven't used mine. Those who have used mine have also posted good reports, and the have not used Freechex.

So it's up to what the needs are for each individual I would imagine. Both make gas checks and we have taken care of the high factory cost for those who like to make their own. Which is a great thing.

I think there's probably (hopefully) enough business for both brands.

I got to take the .30/30 Hi-wall out a couple of times this spring. Using an Eagan MX3-AR cast in linotype and capped with a 0.014" aluminum check from one of Pat's Checkmaker dies. Boolits were sized to 0.3115" and lubed with BAC. Used 27.5 and 28 grains of 4895. Aiming square is 15/16" across. Distance was 100 yards.

That last group is a " keeper " ! Impressive ! What is the distance ?

Ben

BTW.......People keep saying that AL gas checks " won't shoot ", so much for those comments.

what kind of throat does your 30-30 have?I shoot the Eagan MX3-30 Ard in a custom bolt but mine is throated .310 x 1.5 deg.it doesn't shoot as well in my standard 30-30 chambers.I'm still waiting for my checkmaker now i really anxious!!

Nice groups.

HARRYPOPE:

My Hi-wall was rebarreled by Richard Hoch back in the 60's before he started making boolit molds. I have never measured the throat. It will chamber a longer boolit than a standard chamber. I am not much help to you.
The Checkmaker is worth the wait.

no,that was helpful.I was curious if a standard 30-30 no lead could shoot that well.It appears yours is throated properly. Why make a chamber cast?,if it shoots go with it!
