Anyone here using Accurate 2230 to load .223?

My needs are simple, I load 55 gr FMJs for my AR and my father in law's Savage bolt gun to punch paper with. I've used IMR 4320 for many years but am finding it difficult to get. I see 2230 is available from my usual sources and is cheaper to boot.

Really I'm looking for any negative experiences you may have had. Otherwise I think I'll try it.

I used several 8lb jugs of 2230C and it worked great. This is a surplus powder that is about the same as 2230. I have also used some real 2230 and again, I liked it and would use more if I had it.

This is ball powder so it meters very well.

It was designed for the .223 (hence the name). I use it for a lot of my varmint shooting and like it a lot.

I use 25.0 grains of AA2230 with all 55 grain bullets in all my 223 chambered guns; long, short and in between. Works very well.

223,25-20,30-30 357 max and a couple of others.
it's a good powder,it's a bit sensitive to hot primers though.

A few years ago I evaluated it head to head against H335 in the .223 w/ 55 grain bullets. Not bad, but the H335 gave me noticeably smaller groups.

I use exactly the same load - 25.0 gr of AA2230 with 55gr FMJBT bullets - in my two ARs and I'm very pleased with the results. I have used the same powder with my 22-250 and have gotten many groups of 5 shots that could be covered with a nickel, shot at 100 yards. It may not be the best for all applications but it will work in many calibers and will work very nicely with several different cast boolits in 30 cal and even 7mm Rem Mag. Just MHO.

I have used about 40 pounds of this powder with good results in the 223 and 30-30. I will be using more of it in the future as a have quite a bit on hand.

Well, I'm the odd guy out, I reckon.

In just about everything I've tried AA2230 in, it has been my worst performing powder--especially so in .223. I even went so far as to contact the ballisticians at Accurate Arms.

Now, for the record, AA makes two of my absolute all-time powders: AA#2 and AA#5. In fact, the AA#5 is THE powder I use for 9mm jacketed reloads. I will not use any other powder. AA#5 also gives me incredibly fine accuracy and consistency in a .38 Special load I have with my TL158SWC boolits.

I like AA powders. A lot. Just not the 2230 stuff.

For .223, I haven't found anything that will beat H335.

2230 hasn't worked all that well in my 223s either. The best combo I've found for the PSS is a 52gr A-Max loaded with RL-22 powder.

2230 is ok in a spray and pray black rifle, but I get much better groups with H335 in my bolt guns.

Since nobody has mentioned using 2230 in the .223 in a Ruger Mini-14 2nd year model, I guess I will. I use 24 gr. of 2230 behind a fmj 55 gr. bullet in fired LC or R-P brass with CCI primers. I made up a batch of ammo using SP and HP bullets for varmits using the same recipe. I get, on average, a 2 to 2 1/2" groups off the bench at 100 yds. I don`t find it any dirtier than 335 is and really no difference in functioning or accuracy.Robert

2230c was MY powder in AR's until it dried up and I had good luck with it in MY guns.

I will need powder by spring, where is it cheap? thanks

I've used quite a bit of AA2230 in the .223/5.56 and 7.62 NATO. I use it to duplicate M193 velocity and pressure with equal or better accuracy using 52-55 gr bullets. I use 26 gr in LC cases and WSR or CCI450 prmers. I've gotten excellent results for many years with this combination.

I also use AA2230 to duplicate M80 ball velocity, pressure and acuracy with 147-150 gr bullets in LC 7.62 cases with WLR, CCI 250 or CCI #34 primers.

I find AA2230 entirely adequate and the equal of H335 fo such loads where accuracy is more a function of the quality of the bullet than any other factor. Conversely I do use H335 for my accuracy varmint loads in .223 with 50-55gr quality bullets.

It is an Extreme powder ,SC extruded type that meters very well in Dillon 550. I tried 2230 once, thats all I can say about it. My 2¢. Russ.

i have used a small ton of various flavors of 2230...2230,data, c and s.

i have shot 335...i'd rather shoot 2230 any day.

guess this means rifles are different...lol.

it meters excellet, choots clean, shoots very well in MY GUNS....2 bolts, 4 ar's.....

lots of good powder out there, it is quite acceptable.

its way better than 55fmj's. they are no way to test the abilities of a rifle , nor a powder.

I'm with Mike on this one! I've used the 2230-C data powder for several years in 223, 222, and 222 magnum with excellent results. As a real bonus, it's a ball powder and runs through the powder measure like water. I shoot 26.0gr in a LC case sparked by Winchester SR primers with a 55gr flat base hollow point bullet I make. This load has been suprisingly accurate in all my 223's. (an AR, a mini 14, a 700 standard barrel, a 700 Varmint Special, and a 700 PSS)

Im another one that used to claim that 2230 was second rate for accuracy. When i got to looking one day i found that for the most part all i loaded with it was ball bullets. I guess i figured the powder was cheaper so id use it with the cheap bullets for blasting ammo. I started gettting serious with it and found using 55 and 60 grain vmaxs and 55 sierras that i got under moa accuracy in my ars with it. Just as good as i ever did with 335 or 748, I agree that its primer sensitive and it takes some experimenting with primers too but thats no different then 335 or 748 either. I think that comes mostly from the fact its a small case.

I've been using 2230 in 223 and 308 for many years. Works for me, but I like H335 as well.
