Does anyone here know what is the longest cartridge length that will feed from the magazine of a model 53 chambered in 32-20 ?

Also how long is a 311440 bullet with gas check from nose to tail ?

Thanks very much , Jack

The Lyman book says 1.592 oal, you can try from there up.. You need to buy a new Lyman reloading manual.

I have an RCBS drawing that gives the O.A.L. of the 32-20 between 1.540 to 1.592. I am actually awaiting delivery of an original Winchester Model 53 in 32-20. Also, I am constructing a database of surviving Winchester Model 53's as part of my research for a couple articles I am planning to write on the 53. I would be very grateful if you could pm me with the data for your Model 53 (if it is one of the originals), including serial number and description (takedown or solid frame, deluxe, etc.). In return, if it is 5 digits or less for its serial number, I can give you the Winchester Polishing room info for your rifle.

I have the recent Browning version of the M53. My experience is that OAL has to be determined for your individual rifle. Start with 1.54 and go out from there. I use 10 grains of 2400 under a Lyman 115 grain lead PB slug. You can go hotter by a grain or two but cases will not last and leading becomes a problem. 10 grains zips that little pill out there right smart.

Kirk , If I could help ya I sure would . Mine is also a Browning and so far I've been very limiting to what I feed it . Since I emptied my Dillon range bag of ammo for it I will need to get it into the reloading schedule again .

The bulk ammo will be using the H&G number 67 but I have been reading a little of Paco's info about the 311440 . I had a Contender years ago with a 32-20 barrel and it took 311466 Like a politician to money . I'm thinking of flattening the nose of the 311466 and at least see if I could make them feed and where the base of the bullet would be . It's not something I must do though .

I use 1.57 OAL for both my Marlin 1889's and that seems max for them. 8 gr AA9 with 115 gr CB gives me 1270 fps and great accuracy.
