Got a free lb of this powder, and have yet to find any load data outside of the 7.62x39, for which I shoot but do not reload.

Can anyone recommend a starting point for using such powder in a .223, or other?

I've used it with satisfaction in the Hornet and Bee, and with a little less success in the Fireball. Some use it in large straight cases like the 375 Winchester and .45-70 but I haven't.

This is an excellent powder for the 22 Hornet. Very uniform ignition, much more consistent than H110/296.

Great for 25-20. I consider it to be the equivalebt of 4198 for medium to small cases. BvT

Thanks for the info fellas. I thought it wouldn't have enough volume for a big cartridge like a 45-70. I think I'll start with a light load using 4198 data for the .223 and see how it goes. I should edit to add the particular calibers of which I load:

223
30-30
30/06
45-70

I don't believe that it is suitable for pistol cartridges, but in case:

32acp
9mm
45acp

I have used 1680 in 30 carbine, 7.62X39. 218 bee, 22 harnet all with good results. I think it is faster burning than 4198 and probably not suitable for anything bigger than the rounds I have listed. I have also used it for 45 colt (hot loads).

The thing with 1680 is it needs a pretty good bit of pressure to burn correctly. I will sometimes use it with cream 'o' wheat fillers to boost the pressures, but you need to be careful with that. It would be really easy to overpressure big cases or small bore rifles. You could probably get it to work in the 30-30 with filler, but start light and work up. Same way with the 45-70, but I wouldn't use it in the 30-06 or 223.
I do use a lot of it in the 7.62x39, 23 grains of it behind the Lee 155 goes the same speed as 17 grains plus COW. The fillered loads print groups less than a third as big though.

I use it in my 375Win handgun.

1680 is a bit fast for the 223.
it is awesome in the supermags. the 357/375 and 445 just love it.
slower than h-110,and a bit faster than 322. or accurates 2230 a versatile powder in it's own right.
it is right in there with win's old 680 and is considered it's replacement.
great in the 25-20 too.
you should find data on accurates website.

In KenWaters Pet Loads he suggests a load of 14.0 of AA 1680 with a 100grn(J) bullet at approx 1550 fps in the .32-20 shot from a Savage Model 23.

I have loaded a bunch of these upfor my model 23 but have not tried them yet.

ive used it in the 762x39, 22 hornet, 3220, 475 and 500 linebaughs. Im sure it would work well in the 3030 or simular rounds. Ive also fooled with it a bit in the 44mag and it did fine but if you werent looking for the last fps. Im also sure it would be fine for some loads in the 4570 and 444.

Accurate had 1680 J-word 223 data in their old manual. You can probably send them an email and get a copy.
This is form Lyman 49.
cases: Remington; trim-to length: 1.750"; primers: Remington 7 1/2; primer size: Small Rifle; Lyman shell holder: No. 26; cast bullets used sized to .224" dia.; firearm used: Universal Receiver; barrel length: 24"; twist: 1-12"; groove dia.: .224; NOTE: Although the 223 Remington cartridges will chamber in 222 Magnum rifles, shooters should not fire the 223 Remington cartridge in any rifle chambered in 222 Magnum.

Back around 1990-91 or so I had a 788 in .222 Remington that absolutely loved 1680 and a 50 grain Hornady SX bullet. I don't have records of the load; but I remember the nickel sized groups fired at 150 yards, prone with sling.

I have some loads for 25-20 WCF and 32-20 WCF using cast boolits and AA-1680 in the cabinet ready for test drives. Maybe the rain, snow, and doctor appointments will provide a window of oppurtunity soon to enable same.

I've long used AA-1680 for cast bullets in the 7x57, 6.5x55, .303 Brit and similar capacity cases. Loads have ranged from 18.0 ~ 22.5 grains.... no filler. I hold each cartridge bullet up before loading in the rifle and performance has been excellent.

It gives great max loads in the 357 Maximum with 180 grain bullets. I also like it in my 454 and 7TCU.

Jimkim, exactly what I was hoping to find. I appreciate all the info, folks! Will try a few in the 223 and 30-30 this week.

The new Lyman manual lists AA-1680 for the .223 under the cast bullet loads. Keeping an eye on the pressure I've had good luck using those suggested loads with jacketed bullets as well. I also found that one of the best powders for cast boolits in the .22 Hornet.

1680 Works great for cast boolits in 7.62 X 39! Ed Harris has a some data in his article on 7.62 X 39.

I use the surplus WC680 in the 44 mag with the Lee 310gr RFN. Not the highest velocity but very accurate. Recoil is slower than with most other powders also.

Also in the 300 Whisper with 314299 at 200+ grs. bullet weight.

1680 works well with 300-221 fireball aka 300 whisper in AR with 220 & heavier bullets (and it does cycle the action)

I tried AA1680 in .223 and 6.8 (AR-15's)and it don't work. (I picked up 8# at a very good price) I couldn't find anything it would work in. one day I was looking up info for different guns with powders and I found that AA1680 was made for the 7.62x39. But there are a lot of other powder that work in these guns. I would like to try case loads but can't find GC's or molds

I burned through many pounds of aa1680 powder, when I was shooting field pistol and big bore silhouettes. It's a good powder to use in a TC 32/20 and heavy cast boolits.

My favorite in the DW 375 Supermag and the 414 Supermag both with heavy boolits.

I will refresh this older thread.
I am planning to use 1680 under swaged 55-60gr .223 and my question is what are the lower and upper limits?
For now I am planning to start with 18.5gr under 55gr.

Yes, I know it is not 100% suitable powder for .223 but I need to reach IPSC factor and still get economic well shooting ammo.

By the way:
1:9 twist
14,5" barrel
AR15 semi auto.

As has been said a little too fast for 223 with all but the lightest bullets. Accurate number 2 manual has data for 223 with 45,50,53 and 55 gr bullets under HANDGUN DATA. In rifle data there is 1680 data for the same bullet weights plus 35 grain V-max.

I had forgotten about this thread. I found some success with the powder (going from memory here, I'll need to dig out logs to verify) using lighter jacketed bullets and cast GC'ed bullets around the 60gr mark.

I am, however, burning the heck out of it in my 458SOCOM. Under a 450ish gr cast slug, *IIRC*, 38gr of AA1680 works well.

I've all but given up on reloading for 223, given how inexpensively I can buy XM193 through work now.

I used 53.5 grains in 45-70 under a 250 Grain Barnes Bullet a few times. All I can say is it was quite impressive.
