Who here has slugged their Uberti 45-70 bore and what was the groove diameter? I'm considering an Uberti High Wall in that caliber but fear that the groove diameter may not be the published .456".

I slugged my hiwall after I bought it. I was glad to see that it was .457-.4575. Seeing as how most commercial moulds run around .459, I don't think you would need the .456 groove dimension. My Lyman 520 grain rn 457125 mould casts at .459-.460. I size to .459.

I have a Uberti Sharps rifle and it slugs out at .457" and I size my bullets to .459" and get good accuracy.

Jack & Nick, thank you both. I can live with a .457 - .458" groove diameter. Larger than that would likely be a problem and require a custom mold, sizing die etc......... expenses I'd rather not have.

NickSS provided information relating to the Uberti Sharps, while doubs43 asked for information which applies to the Uberti Hiwall.
The Hiwall barrels are made by Uberti, but the Sharps barrels are made by Pedersoli.
As barrels go, the two are not very similar.

If NickSS's really slugs at .457" it is unusually small for a Pedersoli barrel...unless he slugged it at the muzzle, where groove diameter is smaller than at the chamber.

CM, what would you expect the Uberti High Wall 45-70 barrels to measure groove wise? Would I be better off with a Miroku Winchester High Wall? (That's probably a silly question but I thought I'd ask anyway.)

This will give you the diameter etc of the Uberti barrels.

Yes you would be better off with the Winchester.

It states their 38-55's are .379 but I have seen reports of.380-.382. Mine runs .382.

Thanks ktw. That's exactly why I asked the question. If it's not between .456" & .458", I really don't want it. If several other people who already own the Uberti High Wall have slugged their bore and report reasonably tight tolerances, I'd seriously consider one. Otherwise I'll just have to spend the extra to get a Winchester.

Anybody's barrels can be out by .001, but as to spend the extra money part on the Winchester, you may want to go look at Gallery of guns, last I looked there you could get a Winchester with sights for less than one of the Italians.

Doubs, my Uberti Hi Wall slugged at .458. I replaced the barrel early on, though. the Uberti twist rate was about 1-20 which was too slow. Out to 400-500 meters, it shot well enough to get be a couple of trophys, but past 500 and the boolits started to tumble and hitting anything was just luck. I put a Green Mountain 1-18 twist barrel on it and have not looked back. If Uberti had put the faster twist rate in their barrels, I might still be shooting that barrel.

Thanks to everyone who has taken the time to reply. I've checked Davidson's as Don suggested and have ordered an 1885 Winchester High Wall in 45-70. While Buffalo Arms has the Uberti High Wall for less, I expect the Winchester will hold it's value better. Also, if it shoots even close to the 38-55 Winchester I already own, it should be a winner.

you will like the 45-70,mine is a tack-driver.It shoots every boolit I've tried very well. The saeco 350 is my most liked so far.My saeco 480 PB shoots great also.

That's good to know. I presently have the RCBS 300 GC, SAECO 300 plain base, Lee 340 plain base and Lyman 405 plain base bullet moulds.

It's interesting that the Lee 340 shoots nice groups at 100 and 150 meters from my 1874 Pedersoli rifle but opens up more than I like when the distance increases to 200 meters. I get tighter groups at 200 meters from the SAECO 300.

I hope to have the rifle by this Tuesday. I'll let everyone know how it shoots as soon as the weather permits.
