Found a very nice 99 today. It's a 250-3000, not d&ted, no sling studs or swivels. An eg model from 1952. Barrel is very, very clean along with the crown. It has normal wear on the wood & metal, but no real damage, No cracks, no dings. & no splits. Any one have a load for a 1 in 14 twist barrel ?

If you don't mind me asking...what did you pay. I have been looking for one in the .250 for awhile. Kind of hard to find around here. My late brother-in-law had one and it was a great gun. His grandmother shot a B&C bull elk (ranked 7th in the world at the time she shot it years ago with it). I have seen him take elk, deer, antelope, and he even took a Rocky Mtn.goat with it before he passed from cancer. Sorry can't help with load info...just curious what you gave for it...Any pics? Thanks!

I gave $600.00 for it. I had a 250 take down I let get away from me years ago & always wanted another. This is the third one I've seen in the last 7 or 8 years & in the best shape of all, glad I waited.
BTW, lots of lr/sr primers at this show, cci, ww, wolf, & some feds. Maybe things are getting better. Price was $32/35 per K. Didn't see much for pistols. Also a lotta powder.

6.5 mike,
Try either the Hornady 87 or Nosler Ballistic Tip 85 with 34.5 grains of IMR4064 and a WLR primer (or whatever brand is available to you). Your 1-14 twist requires a shorter, thus lighter bullet to stabilize. I bought a M70 carbine in 250 Savage in the mid-80's and hoped to find a load with 100-117 bullets, but no go. After too many frustrations to count I saw the 1-14 twist designation on the end of the packing carton and felt like a dummy. After changing my bullet selection, former shotgun patterns with the longer bullets became tight groups with the shorter bullets. Your rifle should love the lighter bullets and the deer will never know the difference.

Thanks Thin Man, that load sounds like one I had used in the other 250 I had. Went digging in my 257 stuff & found part of a box of hornady 100 grs & half a box of rem 86 grfp's. Don't even remember where I got them, crs I guess.
Slugged the bbl today, 0.2505/0.257. Think a .259 cast boolit might be real interesting, or pp'ed to size.

I had a .250 99 several years ago and found it would shoot the 100 grain Speer bullets plenty accurate for hunting deer but, the 87 grain was a bit more precise. Try the 100 Speer, some will and some won't. I never got around to trying cast in it.

Mike,

75 gr hornady hollowpoints are deadly on coyotes, and make sub moa groups with my 99. Model 99 savages respond well to partial full length sizing. Set your die to minimal shoulder set back and groups will shrink.

JDL, I do have a few 100 gr hornadys I'll try a few & see.
Ammohead, figured to FL first time & neck size from there, do this with most all my rifles.
And for our slow texan, it's penscola fl. I though everone knew that, but I was wrong LOL.

Pensacola Florida Gun Show perhaps - he is from Milton Florida...

I have a 358 99 from the 70's - fun gun. Always loved the terminal effects when you hit a deer, I've never had to track one with that gun.
