I like everything about the Marlin 45-70 CB except the straight stock. Was just wondering what kind of ordeal it would be to replace the stock with a PG one.

You'll have to replace the stock and the lever itself with those from the PG model. I believe all parts can be had from e-gunparts.com.

I changed my straight gripped guidegun to pistolgripped.
Traded parts with a guy who wanted the straight stock.
We changed buttstocks, levers and the "bottom tang".
Now, my gun feels a bit more "controlable" when shooting HOT loads.

As has been mentioned, the swap is pretty easy and just involves the buttstock, the trigger plate, and the lever. I believe all the modern round bolt Marlin actions (336, 444, 1895) are interchangeable. A lot of people with PG Marlins are interested in converting to straight grip, so I don't think you'll have any problem finding someone willing to do a swap. The only difficulty might be in finding a PG stock without checkering to match your unchecked forearm.

Where are you located? I'm in the Fort Worth area and have a pistol gripped 336, maybe we could swap parts?

You have to change the stock, trigger plate, and lever.

The parts from any 336, 444, or 1895 will work.

I believe that the lever for the 1895 differ a bit from the others... it has a recess to clear the large rim of the mighty 45-70.
Atleast thats what ive been told:roll:.

Can this be done with the 1994?

The trouble with doing this on an 1894 is that there were very few pistol grip 1894's made, so the PG parts are scarce.

Thanks for that, Warhawk.

The 1895 lever is different from a 336 as it has a relief cut. I am told the 1895 will work in a 336 but not the reverse. I have many 1895 levers in 336s. Ask outloud for a lever and I'd be someone has one they'd sell.

Southern Son, yes it can be done. The only 1894 that had a pistol grip was the one in 41 mag. 1894FG. I did it two years ago with a 1970's 357 mag pre crossbolt and had it changed to 38 special only with the cowboy barrel.

Doc, Thanks for that. You have a sweet looking rifle there. I have a feeling that if I was to get it done here in Oz, it would mean custom parts from a gunsmith. I don't know if there were ever any 1894FG imported into Oz.

I took my 1895 Cowboy apart to install a wild west trigger and found a large bulge on the side of the magazine tube and the fore end is hollowed out to fit. Why is it there?
